What if the way they would fix the WRX tranny problem is to make it so you can only use the first 3 gears? You can still reach 80 (at redline).

The huge deal is that you paid for the other 2 gears. And I paid for 300bhp, not 275.

I dunno, i don't see it as a huge deal...

I think it is a big deal to STi owners. They paid for a 300hp car!!! It is unacceptable for owners to know that their car has to be detuned to run safely! again.. like someone has already said, its false advertisement! A lawsuit will be followed if this ECU-reflash thing is true... Seriously, 25hp makes a lot of difference! I wouldn't pay for a car that I will have to bring back for detune.. I could have gone w/ the EVO instead!

I don't think it would be 25 flywheel HP. But lets see what happens...

I mean, what do STi owners want to do to fix this pinging problem? would you like a refund?

<i'm not being sarcastic or anything...>

Not gonna happen. That motor would run like crap on 91 octane too.

That's not entirely accurate. The EVO is slower in the 0-60 times and the quarter mile times according to Car & Driver and SCC. It even had a better road course lap time in SCC, but didn't handle the road course as gracefully according to them. The editors said the reason they liked the EVO better was because it handled more predictably at the limits. Big Deal. How many people can take these cars to their limits. I think they should take other things into consideration like maintainence. That EVO is a hard car to work on. Most of us like to do our own wrenching and I've got to say that the flat four has got to be one of the easiest engines to work on that I've ever come across. I call it affectionately my level 1 snap together car and I like modifying it as much as driving it. Anyway getting back to it, if you ask me there are two main reasons the editors feel this way. One thing is the front limited slip diff can cause some unpredictable steering especially on the street. I would actually prefer an open diff myself for street driving or even better an adjustable front diff, but that would be costly. Second when Subaru designed the STI it's primary function was to be fast on everything except the street as there were very few tarmac rallies in the early 90's. They really shine in WRC rallies that run on gravel, snow or mud covered roads, but tend to fall a little short on tarmac. That doesn't matter to me though my favorite thing about them is there superior engineering especially the powertrain it's so old school, longitudinal drivelines are the bomb.

...and if you guys are going to be mad at someone make it oil companies and the state gov'ts their the ones denying us the high octane fuels.
Hey, just a thought am I the only one that noticed that octane ratings drop from east to west. I grew up in NY and it was easy to get Sunoco 96, now I live in CO and have to hunt down 93, and I hear in Cali anything higher then 91 can only be found at a racetrack. Ok nuff said this is getting longwinded I need to cut down on the caffeine

Later

You're right... we should upset with the root of the cause.

Hi Gagan,

This is a HUGE deal! The principle of truth in advertising is very important to most consumers, and there are no ends to the precendent already pointed out in this thread to what will happen if it seems like SOA is pulling a classic bait-and-switch.

Look at it this way. If Subaru offered you a 6MT upgrade for the $2000, and then turned around 3 months later saying "6th gear grinds, bring it in and we'll weld a plate onto the shifter gate over the 6th gear slot," how would you feel? After all, they did what was needed to solve the problem right? As for you spending $2k expecting to get a 6 speed transmission, too bad!

This isn't just a 91 octaone issue, as from what I understanding the pinging happens on 93/94 as well (I believe). There's no problem saying "300HP!*" with fine print at the bottom stating "*on 100octane race gas," but if you're going to do that, your 100oct numbers better add up, even after a reflash

yeah, 1 octane point isn't going to lower hp by 25... they have really good engineers who can work this out without any issues.
