Shipping Cars Cross Country
hey,
i'm going to U of Chicago this year and i'm thinking about shipping my wrx over there. Although i feel bad for it--being a sunny Cali car and all, i'm sure it and i will be able to adjust to the harsh cold weather.
Now, pretaining to the topic at hand....
has anyone ever shipped a car using a carrier before? What was it like? How much did it cost? Thanks a bunch.

Just drive it, as a bay area resident who did the cross country trip, then back to Chi its not that bad, and I had a ton of fun in the process.
Ahh, have a blast at UofC....where fun goes to die. Are you going to be living in Hyde Park or the dorms?

Ehh, its not too bad. I actually have a couple friends who go to UofC and a couple more who live in the co-ops. Yeah, the winters are a little bit harsh(from what I have heard, I just got here a couple months ago myself) but the summers kick ***, and living on the lake rules.
Hell, shoot me a PM when you get here if you want a tour of the city or something.

i shipped my car from NYC to Oakland and also took about 2-3 weeks and cost around $800-850.
do not use AAA Auto Transport. they shipped my car via truck, and then just left it at the docks in Oakland. they didn't tell anyone where it was going, whom it belonged to, or even leave the keys. the people at the shipping company saw my registration in the windshield and contacted the NYC DMV to find my last noted address. got in touch with my dad, called me, and the rest is history. AAA Auto Transport = suckage

Thanks guys. So which companies did you end up using? I've heard that lots of cars get to their destinations with a bunch of chips.
I still have a few weeks. I'm going to hit up beaches every other day. lol.

speedybullets - what part of NYC are you from?
escaflowne - just google 'auto transporters' and email them a load of questions. and once you pick one and they've picked up your car, call them every other day for the status of it's location. as for the chips on the car, when they pick it up, they do a 'walk through' with you, going over the blemishes on the car(like insurance does when you get full coverage) - and again when you receive the car. if there is anything wrong when you get your car back, and it's not noted on the first inspection, they'll be responsible.

hangbot- I grew up in brooklyn. How bout u ?
escaflowne - I used Express Auto Transport. They were ok. Just make sure that they load your car onto the truck and call them every few days to track your vehicle. For mine they delayed the shipping by a few days and I didn't know. Good luck and enjoy the city. As for the chips, they're almost inevitable sometimes. You can ask them to load the car on the lower deck right behind the cabin if possible. But just make sure you put like 500 coats of wax before the car is shipped, cuz ur paint is gonna be gettin lots of sunlight.
