Almost every time I've driven down to Mexico ( I use the I-5-210), it's taken me about 5-5 and a half hours to get to LA. I generally leave at 6AM and there's traffic, but not slow built up traffic. Rather many cars driving 75-85 on I-5 until the grapevine. There people will slow down to 70 because CHP likes to snag people, especially on the downhill. Your best bet would be to go late at night or very early morning for the smoothest trip
