this. i stop at the "lost hills" exit. i used to stop at kettleman city but lost hills is a bit less crowded and i've found the gas prices slightly cheaper. i'll usually get gas at the 76 and use the restrooms and get snacks at the pilot gas station. (better bathrooms and good selection of snacks). they also have a wendy's attached if you are that hungry.

I was surprised when I first got my '04 WRX wagon tuned after the up/dp, catback, 6-speed STi trans, and got 27mpg going down to Bakersfield from Yuba City on one tank. It sounds like others on stage 2 are getting similar results.
FYI, I found this site when planning a possible drive back from PA to pick up a FXT (if he hasn't sold it by the end of this week) and it calculated the approximate cost of fuel & where to buy fuel along my route to get the best deals. You might try using this calculator to figure your best bet for fuel/$$ savings down & back.
