Remote Control (RC) Hobby? 1/5th Scale
Well you have already hit on a few things that I have already learned and bought. I also did hear that NorCal Hobbies was going to build one, but I also heard it got shot down. I also heard rumor that they allow 1/5th on their current track every once in a while...
I have both limiting straps, and the Killer RC Super Bee kill switch on order... as well as upgraded brakes. I just installed a new pipe this weekend... and now on the street I can get the front tires off the ground!! Pretty amazing for a 30# beast!
As for that forum, I am already on there, and lurking on largescalerc.
You should pick another one up... I got mine used for a really decent price with a few upgrades already done to it.

I've had tons of nitro R/Cs...raced some 1/8 buggies a couple years ago. Definitely a blast, but even at a semi competitive state, it was expensive buying tires/fuel each week.
I also had a Baja SC SS which was a BLAST TO DRIVE! There were rumors of a 1/5 scale track being built at NorCal Hobbies, but the idea was shot down due to lack of interest. I ended up selling mine because I couldn't find any empty dirt lots.
Make sure to buy a KillerRC kill switch for your Baja. Even if you're using a 2.4GHz radio, you'd hate to lose the signal and have a 30 lbs truck ram into something/one lol. Also, pick up some limiting straps to save your shocks.
Check out this forum for more info on your Baja. Tons of excellent information here: HPIBajaForum
I miss mine =(

I have a bunch of serpent r/c stuff mainly the serpent impulse model that i dont even run anymore. If i remember correctly, I have a full runner a complete chassis needing only electronics and a motor then a spare chassis that was wrecked and used to scrap parts off of. I dont really have time to play with them anymore though...
