My guess is it's the second. Mine first only lasted 65k.

I'm still on the factory clutch at 227K Miles and counting.

Chances are that yes, a new clutch would probably help resolve the issue when coupled with a new flywheel (or at least a resurfaced one, but I personally prefer just getting brand new stuff for wear & tear items).

It could be that the previous owner had mods and put in a heavier duty clutch. Most "stage 1" clutches will shudder some, I know for a fact if I don't let it out just right, my ACT HDSS does the shudder.

It could easily be original clutch.. Normally when a clutch starts to wear out is starts slipping. Shuddering could mean mechanical failure somewhere in the clutch pressure plates. If you decide to replace it make sure you get a genuine normal Subaru wrx clutch.. Don't get a heavy duty racing clutch or what ever or we will see you back here in a few weeks asking about gear box replacement.. With the power of a rex and AWD the cheapest weak link in case something breaks should be the clutch...A new gearbox will cost a LOT more...and like someone else said.. get your fly wheel machined. Gives nice smooth grip and makes it lighter at the same time.. ;0) ...

My stock 02 clutch had shudder, but mostly when cold, rarely when warmed up.

I replaced it at 145k. Very possible it's original clutch unless the original owner was driving hard on it all the time.

Replaced My OEM on my Stage 2 2005 STI at 95K with ACT HD & Streetlite Fly wheel. Shudders a bit, but very Solid Clutch- Very Happy with it.
