"plane on a treadmill" Just saw it on a commercial break.

EDIT lol hmm just saw the reason this thread was bumped lol

If the conveyor belt could move at any mph, the plane would never lift off.
wheels have nothing to do with it, and the engines are useless because the only reason they have engines is to propel the plane and get the wind under the wings for lift.

like taking off at 200 mph WITH 200 mph wind, im pretty sure nothing would happen except a crash.

Smash lab is so stupid, anyone see the concrete braking ramp thing?

"the concrete is hard in some places and brittle in others... wahhhhh"
YOU HAVE TO MOVE THE HOSE AROUND THAT IS PUMPING THE CONCRETE! hows that for a variable RETARDS!
they left it one place thinking that the concrete would all be the same and perfectly mixed.
I'm sorry but I've seen mythbusters and smash lab where I want to hit myself. I work QA and I just don't understand how they can make such subjective large oversights.........its sad sometimes..........I watch it more for the cool rigs they build, because half their tests are flawed.

And the concrete was totally stupid. They took someone else product, and then couldn't even think of an intelligent real life way to use it......it was so dumb.

Like rad the bus almost stopped because he used the brakes, how about just brake on the pavement.....it defeated the purpose it was for run away vehicle or someone asleep.

These guys are actors on smash lab, they obviously aren't that smart.

smash labs just sucks. I too saw soooooo many oversights with that aerated concrete episode that I was just like "aaaare you serious?"

If Mythbusters makes the plane fly, they'll do it in a way that the myth doesn't allow and they'll be wrong.

The plane will not fly, the only thing pushing air over the wings would be the prop, the wheels and "frictionless" conveyor would keep the whole plane stationary.

I can't believe this got bumped!

Its been discussed and answered many times in the thread. Simple answer is the plane will flow. The wheels spinning because of the conveyor belt will not stop the plane from moving forward. The props or jets are exerting thrust to move the plane forward... the wheel speed nor the speed of the conveyor make any difference here. Its a pretty simple answer once you think about it. I'm sure mythbusters will have no problem showing this principal.

Is the assumption of this myth that the plane will actually take off while its ON the conveyer belt? Either way the plane will still take off but if its going to take off while still ON the conveyer belt thats gonna have to be one LONG conveyer belt... otherwise the plane will keep pulling itself forward off the conveyer down the runway till it has enough speed/lift to take off.

you mean like strapping a rocket engine to it or something?

Sure... the conveyor belt may be as long as you want. The point is that the conveyor moving at just about any speed will have no actual effect on the plane moving forward.

Exactly.

Infinitely long...going the speed of light...will have ZERO effect on the aircraft's speed relative to the air.

Well if you believe the people who say it won't fly, the conveyor belt only has to be long enough to put the plane on it. Because according to them, the plane will never move from that spot.

But they're wrong anyway, so yeah, it would have to be a really long conveyor belt

You are so wrong, and so ignorant to stick to this position that it really amazes me.

I mean I've heard of poor education, but geez.....

Ok, so I get the arguement as to why it could take off, but I still have a question. Why do planes have wheels?

According to your theory planes do not need wheels to take off.

The treadmill would render the wheels effectively useless, meaning the plane would not roll forward.
