question about potential credit fraud

i could use some advice, so please anyone add your two cents to this...

so i got a letter from my doctor saying his computer was stolen, and that all of his patients billing adresses and soc. numbers were on there.

i dont have any credit history whatsoever as of yet, and i was planning on applying for a cc in a few days.

i guess my question is, what should i do? is there like a singular entity that i can call and let them know my personal info might be out there in the open?

thanks, all.

basicly just monitor your credit report, look for any activity that you didnt authorize or do.

You should just proceed and get a CC like you planned.

You should be ok, but pull your credit report every 6 months or so to make sure everything is still cool.

Call transunion, equifax and experian and put a notification warning on your information.

It's disturbing how frequent things like this are happening... UC Bekeley had a laptop stolen in March that contained thousands of graduate students personal data including SSN so I got a letter similar to your situation.

Like people said above, just call any of the 3 credit agencies to place a fraud alert for 90 days. It's an automated call so you don't need to talk to anyone. You'll need punch in your SSN, street number of your address, etc. The agency you call first will automatically notify the other two agencies for you.

Equidax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian: 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289

You can still apply for a CC as usual but you can certainly let the card issuer know that you've placed a fraud alert on your credit file...

All good information.

If/when you want to pull your credit I can do it for a small fee, Mike. I can pull it from all three bureaus at the same time unlike most agencies.

You should be okay though. I'm sure the person that has the computer probably doesn't know how to utilize that type of information.

KEEP this letter as if it’s made of gold. If you ever become a victim of credit fraud or identity theft because of this incident then that's your meal ticket. All you'd have to is show the bureaus that letter (among other necessary steps) to clear those accounts, etc.

^^^thanks for that bit of advice, salty^^^

i got the same letter, but it was from the SJ Med Center's computers that were stolen in april. i've since placed fraud alerts at all three credit agencies.

even if those thieves are dumb, they might be able to sell it to someone who knows how to utilize that info...

You've never had a credit card or a car loan? Or an apartment in your name? Its possible you don't exist to them, but rather unlikely.
