Alex is dead on. Simply changing the muffler will get you a ticket loud or not. It doesn't matter to cops anymore about the sound. I've been stopped 3 times and everytime I've asked the cop if it was for sound only 1 said yes and I run a blitz nur-spec with a high-flow cat.

yup you are correct the law has changed and now you go to the ref.
it wont be fun dont think that just changing the muffler will get you by, the check everything and depending on where you go they can be nice, but most of them are a**holes...
good luck

You made it louder, also come out and pop your hood" He poked around and ask me where’s my CARB number for my intake (pointing at my turboxs tmic intercooler) I let him know that was a intercooler and my car is turbocharged and comes stock with an intercooler and showed my stock airbox and pulled out the filter for him, he grins and tells me that doesnt look OEM. I told him I didnt want to void my warranty (gruppe-s heatshield worked again! Covered my dp) and he walks back to his bike and hands me a ticket…

cvc 27151(a) Exhaust violation and checks yes for correctable violation

after my research for 30 mins online, I find out that the law has changed and now I have to take it to a state ref. blah what a waste of time and money, I guess he was bored and wanted to give me a ticket. Anyway has anyone gotten this ticket and got it signed off recently or fought it in court or mail? Any comments or tips/tricks would be helpful.

oh yeah I have an hks carbon-ti w/ dp but I was at idle when he told me to stop.
about 3 4 months ago, i got an exhaust ticket for my catback which was for some reason checked NO for correctable. the ticket however, was just over $100, not the usual $10 fix it.

+1 for borla hush!! id rather run a straight pipe than a can melon shoot style exhaust now. straight pipe sounds cooler, cheaper, and looks more stock.

can anybody who has ridden on the freeway on a motorcycle tell me how loud modified exhausts sound?

Even w/ Borla Hush my car's pretty da.mn loud still - whenever I see a motorcycle cop come up I shut down the revs but I'm afraid he's still going to hear it.

I have a straight pipe, you don't even notice that I have an aftermarket exhaust. It sounds awesome, but isn't eye catching. By now it's black too.

I have a Greddy SP2 on my 05 STi. It looks very similar to stock. Thats the whole reason i bought it. I have had no problems. And I drive EVERYWHERE in the bay. It only gets really loud when I step on it. But normal spirited driving it sounds just slightly louder than stock.

But the big plus is that it looks identical to stock. If you have the HKS Carbon Ti.....................you are just begging for attention from the cops. Its common sense. Louder exhausts more attention quieter exhaust........you get the idea. Its appearance probably has a lot to do with it too.
