Legally you can take the car to any shop you choose. AAA just wants to have your car at Pan American because they have negotiated a cheaper labor rate there.
Right around the corner is Apex Autobody which is a well known Subaru body shop.

IF they are not willing to cut you a larger check for a different body shop's quote the body shop will contact the insurance directly and work it out. Not sure if that's how your insurance work but that's just what happened in my experience.
If you do not feel comfortable taking your car to their recommended shop DONT.
thanks for the replies!
Yes I can take it to any shop of my choice.
PanAm has a pretty decent shop. its just the yelp reviews seem almost too good if you know what i mean.
Ill check out Apex. keep the suggestions coming.

Blossom Valley Collision on King Rd. in San Jose, near Aborn. They are really clean, are really professional and take care of you. I got rear ended, Triple A sent me there and I was happy with the service.
Don't know if this helps since this shop it in east bay, but i went to a shop trusted by AAA, Tommy's Auto Body when I got rear ended in my eclipse gst couple years back. The guys over there found the rear bumper was OEM so charged me a OEM priced bumper, paint and labor. They also looked under the bumper and saw the bumper beam was cracked so they threw some labor to fix that in the quote too, this was all before I said I just wanted to cash out since I wanted to fix my car else where..good luck

Pan American in SJ is a pretty good shop. The Benz dealership recommended them when my friend's E550 got hit. I saw her car after they fixed it and they did a good job.
If in doubt, FLAT OUT

I've gone to Da-Les Autobody in Sunnyvale for years because they do excellent work. Preferred shops make the process easier, but I'd rather go to a place I know is good regardless. I actually found Da-Les because they were a preferred shop for Farmers, so preferred isn't always a bad thing
