OPD Cruiser Flips Responding To Deadly Shooting

An Oakland Police Officer was injured while responding to a shooting when her patrol car overturned after colliding with another vehicle on I-580.

That shooting left one man dead, another in critical condition and led to a four-hour standoff with Oakland Police,

The shooting was reported in the 1400 block of East 31st Street around 5 p.m., where two men were suffering from gunshot wounds, police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.

The victims were taken to Highland Hospital where one was pronounced dead and the other remains in critical condition but was expected to survive, Thomason said.

Police surrounded the suspects' house on the same street for about four hours, until witnesses said one of the suspects was on a bus a few blocks away, he said.

He said around 9:30 p.m. one of the suspects was arrested on the bus and when police searched him, they found a firearm.

The other suspect was found walking nearby and police arrested him as well, he said.

A 24-year-old Oakland police officer was driving to the scene the shooting when she crashed with another vehicle on Interstate Highway 580 and was sent to the hospital, according to the California Highway Patrol.

She was driving on the highway just west of Fruitvale Avenue with her lights and sirens on around 5 p.m., Thomason said.

When she switched lanes to go around slower traffic, the right side of the Crown Victoria collided with the left side of a Mini Cooper, according to the CHP.

Her patrol car overturned onto the roof, slid about 250 feet and stopped after colliding with the median barrier, according to the CHP.

Thomason said she was transferred to a hospital and was expected to survive. The driver of the Mini Cooper did not report any injuries.

Traffic along eastbound 580 was blocked for about two hours

Fractured skull??? Wow, that was close. Good to hear that she didn't broke her spine like a antioch cop did in a similar accident a few months ago. I wish her the best.

Pretty intense. So was the other driver at fault for the accident or was the lady cop?
