Sheesh, you guys are harsh!

Anyways, we came to the conclusion that the overboost was likely due to the ECU reset after the dyno run and subsequent drop in elevation on the trip home. It seems to have normalized for now.

As for the diff noise, the jury is still out...

If you have a whine, it is coming from the front or rear diff. The ones that took the abuse when you were thrashing your girlfriends car on the road coarse and then up in the hills playing mister rally boy with some one elses car..............

But hey, what do I know?
I'm the owner of the car, not Mr. Rallyboy. But that's beside the point, because the noise started before we even went up into the hills - or on the auto-x course the next day. But thanks for your input anyway.

Let's see...obviously you know VERY LITTLE.

1. . The ones (start of an incomplete statement)
2. ...girlfriend's (apostrophes help)
3. ...course, (it wasn't THAT rough of a surface =coarse, and commas help)
4. ...someone (all one word)
5. ...else's (again, apostrophes help)

But enough of your lack of grammar and spelling skills.

On to your lack of knowledge about Subaru...

1. You probably didn't comprehend that this is an AUTOMATIC. The center differential is the one that takes the abuse when the front wheels are spinning at around 350 rpm and the rear wheels are spinning around 70 rpm.

2. You obviously know NOTHING about Foresters. The gearing is different in the automatic Foresters than it is in the WRX. The TCU requires a different harness connector than the WRX in order to "lock the diff"... BTW, in a Forester automatic transmission, you lock the center differential by manually shifting into second or first...

3. You obviously know very little about my driving...you weren't working any checkpoints that I was working...you don't know how long it took us to get to the CP at Del Sur, or how long it took getting back. You don't realize that the other stage we worked was the Super Stage...no real dirt driving until the end when we went out on the course and had a little fun at about 1/3 of the speed of the rally cars.

4. The whine is DEFINITELY from the center differential (been observed by people who KNOW the sound very well), and only occurs RIGHT NOW when we accelerate from either a dead stop, or a slow speed using WOT. We don't do that, since it will only speed up the demise of the current differential, requiring the installation of the JDM STi Forester automatic transmission with 4.11 gearing that we have as a backup.

So please...when you know as little as you do about a subject...STFU

That is all.

Well...

Qirt...

I've consulted with a few EXPERTS in this field, including a former lead mechanic for Subaru R&D (Transmission dept.) in Irvine CA, and he says that there is a good chance that the center differential is the one making the noise. There is ALSO a lesser chance that it is attributable to the front differential, but that is a lower probability.

You know Subaru WRX (and hopefully now STi) engines. I can respect that you know more than I do about ENGINES and ENGINE performance. It's obvious that you are a respected name (or at least Crawford) in the industry. For that I'd probably listen to you if it were an engine problem.

It ISN'T an engine problem. I doubt VERY HIGHLY that you've EVER worked on a Forester automatic transmission. I called on the opinion of Adam @ LIC, who I'm sure I-speed recognizes as a person who they'd listen to, and opinion they'd trust. He's heard this sound. It is a sound that has never been heard from our Forester before it was placed on the I-Speed dyno.

If you want to argue that...you can't. Regardless of what differential is making the noise, the point of the conversation (which you might have missed) is that there is a noise coming from the differentials that was NOT there before. We had the entire vehicle tested when we had the Brembo BBK installed two weeks prior, and when the limits were pushed, there was NO NOISE coming from the transmission. Within an hour of taking the vehicle off of the I-Speed dyno, we observed a new sound. Within that time frame, we traveled city streets at or below the speed limit in search of a fueling station. We did NOT race the engine, or downshift at all during the time period. Our transmission temp was in the normal reading range (yes, we monitor that), and the noise only occurred when we were out of town and realized we were running late. On an abandoned stretch of desert road, we accelerated...and as soon as we did, there was this new sound from the transmission. Hmm...

Oh, and my driving? I guess you must have been too busy at the booth or the dyno to be watching what I (or Pleiad7) were doing in the vehicle. We were having some fun, but tempering the acceleration in deference to the new noises, so as not to aggravate them.

I'd like to hear who you refer to...because I'm sure I can make a few more phone calls and get a few more Subaru R&D guys...who have rebuilt more transmissions than you have engines...

Just out of curiousity, are you naive enough to believe that a hydraulic clutch pack is just made of fluid??

The clutch pack has METAL PLATES... which when overheated have a tendency to warp and scrape together...which when doing so at different speeds...could have the tendency to sound like a whine...

But back to your engines...a subject which you know well.
