#2 is not rated for our Subaru engines so its out
#3 is a group 3 oil, I would not use it

So, you are left with one choice. However you could go Motul, or any of the group 4/group 5 oils out there.

Again, SHELL, the MANUFACTURE does not recommend it be used in gas engines.

+1. same here for my subaru. i just switched over from rotella to motul 8100.

if you have amazon prime, you can get the four 5 quart jugs for about $40/jug.

rotella t6 would run you close to $30/jug + 1 additional quart

Shell Rotella T6 5W-40... God Send? - Subaru Legacy Forums

That's the best educated link I could find. Also, according to multiple sources, the additives in t6 only become problematic if oil consumption is an issue, and therefore it would damage your cats. Which would not be a problem for people with catless exhausts.

You got a link to where they said that? I'd like to read it.

For what its worth, I sent oil samples out to Blackstone labs regularly and saw nothing but positive results. My 2.0L turbo motor loved Rotella T6.

I just emailed the shell techs to ask directly since i was curious. I dont use this oil, but wanted to know there thoughts on using it in a subaru engine. Alot of what they said we already knew, but heres the response I got back for anyone wondering...

"Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Oil SAE 5W-40 does carry an API SM category rating for use in gasoline engines. In applications where the viscosity grade is appropriate, and where the vehicle does not have a catalytic converter under warranty, the oil normally works well.

However, Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Oil SAE 5W-40 does contain more phosphorous than most gasoline-only engine oils, and phosphorous is a potential poison for the catalyst in catalytic converters. If your engine burns oil, the product could shorten the life of the converter compared to gasoline-only products."
