Hey guys and gals,

First of all happy new year!
Anyway, it's coming time to do my first oil change on the hawkeye and I'm trying to decide on an oil. (Previous owner dropped contact with me after hearing about my now fixed misfire issue which ended up being a bad ground to my sensors) I never did ask since he always got it changed at the dealership assuming most oils are the same. For the past 3 or 4 days I've spent some time researching what oil to go for and what to stay away from. Rotella t6 seems to be a popular choice along with motul v300. I've heard lots of conflicting info about needing to run full synthetic since it's boosted but others claim it causes issues with the whole Mobil1 scare. So, what do you guys use and recommend? I know there is no "best oil" but I want to treat my car right and maximize her lifespan. Thanks!

I personally use Rotella T6. Helped with my oil consumption issue when I was using 5w30 conventional

Ditto. Just be sure to buy the extra single quart bottle - the Rotella jug is only 4 qts. For the money, just about the best. I go 6-7K miles on RT6 without noticeably losing a drop (5quarts/fill).

Or M1 TDT 5w40, or M1 euro 0W40 or German Castrol (heavy 30 grade). Avoid regular M1 5w30 and ANY resource conserving oil.

enjoy your subie! Oh, and there's no conflict- Subaru officially says all standard issue turbo engines need synth oil.

I used to use rotella but switched over to Motul 8100, the 300V is the competition series which I don't think you need.

*sigh*

Ok first off, for all the people using T6, you should NOT be using it. Even shell has said its not for use in gas turbo motors. They don't market it for our motors, they market to the diesel crowd. Yes I understand its rated for our motors, but the manufacture says no.

I myself am using Castro Edge(formerly syntec) 5W30 in my engine, and have from day one of the build.

Also remember, filter is KEY, the OEM filter is not enough for a higher performance engine unless you are changing out things more often (like 3000 on the button). I would recommend on a personal level, the K&N filter.

Personally I run Amsoil, its a very good oil but pricey. The guys that built my engine recommended it for the car.

In the RS I've run whatever synthetic 5w-30 was around.

Now that its turbo I have valvoline synthetic 5w-30 just cause I needed something for the swap. Used it again for its only oil change since and seems okay.

This is not a daily driver, so hard to judge.

Next oil change before the start of racing season will be RT6.

Its seems like more and more people are running this oil. I've heard alot of engine builders prefer to use this oil also. Some as a break in oil since it has higher zinc for protection and others running it all the time with good results. Regardless of what Shell says, you would think guys that rebuild engines all day would know first hand whats working and whats not. I do know this oil gets dirty pretty quickly from seeing test results on it, so you need to change it often.

Yea...no. I am going to go with the scientists that design the oil over a engine builder every time. When Shell's design scientists says "no, this is not to be used in gas motors" that's kind of a huge hint right there.
