I'd be surprised if they even made him an offer in the offseason. If they do, it would undoubtedly only be a one or two year contract (prob $3mil per season). He really screwed himself here... he definitely could have easily commanded at least $60 mil this offseason... and probably even more from the Giants considering the great relationship built between the club and fan base over the season and seeing as how the organization likes to take care of our own players...
Their current system is quite strict. You don't get paid during your suspension, so Melky is forfeiting approx. 1/3 of his salary this season. First time offense is 50 games, second 100 games, third time means you are banned from the game for life.

Not all forms of progressive punishment work, and I'm not saying that the MLB's isn't strong, it looks like it works very well. Just that those guys who are borderline and take the PEDs to stay in the game longer as long as they can til they're caught twice is interesting.
