Two Canon EOS-1D X bodies; 14, 24, 50, 100, 200 and 600mm lenses; various extenders and converters; a monopod; filters; a black paint pen; lens cloths; and further assorted paraphernalia. It’s time to head out, trackside, at the Sepang International Circuit.
I was lucky enough to have a chance to watch him work in Austin. Still couldn't figure out, and for what reason, he was marking the fences when he was shooting.

He was just putting marks on fences. My guess was he's trying to get the same angles for all his shots. Not sure for what reasons though.

I would bet that he is just reminding himself where exactly to stand at that particular spot. Especially with how quick the cars move, a few feet in either direction could make a huge difference. With the rate that the cars pass I am sure it would be a pain in the rear to have to figure out exactly where you were the last time at that spot. Even if you stood in the same spot the ENTIRE race you would only have what 50-60 shots of one particular car. You would think thats a lot but I would bet that he takes 2,000+ pictures or more the entire weekend. Those small markers most likely make his life that much easier.

kind of off topic but is this a form of DRS being applied to a drift car?

I believe this is a car built by AE

Not really. That's active aerodynamics.

Pagani has some pretty impressive active aero.

DRS is deployed to reduce drag. So it is really an on of off thing for downforce. Active aero works in between. I don't think anything is F1 is allowed to be active.

I think the DTM DRS is pretty cool. From 0:44 to 1:01

The new McLarens have very similar to set up as the Pagani

Looks like the drifting car is using it for lift at some points to loosen the rear end.

My thoughts as well. How useful is a wing when it's going sideways?

But apparently it does stuff...

Winner!
Yeah it looks as if that's exactly what is doing. Adding grip when needed and taking it away when more sideways is wanted
