I may be overweight right now but I'm still vein. I used to be extremely fit but my work schedule, live style changes and injuries have created a body I hate. I'd love a place where I could get fit in relitive privacy..no huge windows. No pretty boys talking ****. And a place I could learn traditional values like meditating and discipline along with a beautiful art form> I'm not talking karate kid private home lessons or anything like that. I just don't want a store fron yoga class while I flop around like a fat panguin on a buttered frying pan.
fer real, i'm in the exact same boat.

I would like to learn Krav Maga.

There are several locations in the East Bay/Tri-Valley where they teach it.

Try Karate One on Van Ness... the training area is off street...

Kurlee -- If you're interested in San Shou, there's always Cung Le in Santa Clara. If you're not familiar with San Shou, it's a Chinese military style that is essentially linear kickboxing with takedowns.

OneManArmy and constellation -- if you two are interested in a non-commercialized kind of place with no judgements, I urge you to try Fight and Fitness. Since it's such a new gym, most of the folks are n00bs like me, and the experts (from Fairtex originally) are cool, down-to-earth guys. The head instructor, Bunkerd Faphimai, is the nicest guy you'd ever meet that could explode your ribcage with a kick

crash n burn -- hey, taekwondo is NOT corny despite what others have said. If it weren't for Muay Thai, I'd probably be doing TKD or hapkido instead!

I sent chris from fight and fitness an email about an hour or so ago. Asking about boot camp and what not. Basically asked him if it would give some fat bastard like me a heartattack..haaaaa.

So you go there.....sweet.

As for explode you with a rip kick...my girlfriend brother is like that...nicest guy but he could brake my face.

OneManArmy -- coolness! Hope to see there sometime! But IIRC, I don't think boot camp is being offered this year (?)

Oh, and if it counts as a martial art (unlike Vic's ), I also foil fence from time to time. I also have a rudimentary knowledge of kendo

Thanks Choku. I do know what San Shou is, and I know that Cung trains very hard. But trying to get someone on the ground for a POINT, isn't really my cup of tea. And I don't think I could every master that scissor kick takedown.

That's cool Kurlee. Good luck in your search for the right gym with the right style!

OneManArmy, the classes are pretty dang tough. I thought I was in pretty good shape, but the movements for Muay Thai are just so foreign to my muscles that it just burned and burned One hour should be enough to turn your arms and legs to linguine, at least for the first few times. And my shirt? Looked like I got caught in a typhoon, it was so wet after practice. There were a few times during the hour that I was tired I could barely stand and keep my guard up LOL. And I like it like that

I do Northern Shaolin (Buk Sil Lum) and Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut for the past 13 years. CLF is my main style. I've been taught by Sifu Lacey, his son Shane Lacey and now Sifu Lacey's teacher Sifu Lai Hung (yeah, the same guy who was undefeated in leather mitts only tournaments in Taiwan and Macau and defeated the 2nd place champion Muay Thai fighter in Cambodia). For those who don't know, CLF is a derivative of Northern Shaolin except it uses a lot more circular attacks and has heavy swinging punches and cyclic straight punches. It's considered one of the more aggressive kung-fu styles (like Wing Chun and Hung Gar) and has been always in constant contact with Muay Thai fighters (some techniques in CLF are adapted versions of Muay Thai fighting because CLF is still relatively new, around 150 years of age, and evolving). www.buksing.com

I think brucelee (Dan), may have some stuff to say. He took Wing Chun under Sifu Lacey and his son.

Taekwondo is useful, it just depends what affiliation and how it is taught. I will say, WTF (world taekwondo federation, hahaha) Taekwondo is ridiculous. Several organizations have turned it from a useful hands and feet art with numerous moves including grappling and takedowns to some pitiful feet only sport. Have you ever seen the Taekwondo events in the Olympics? It's moronic. If you get too close for you to whip out a kick effectly, sometimes you just chest bump your opponent with your chest protector to prevent him from scoring points. LAME.

Now traditional taekwondo is damn useful and a lot of the grappling and takedown moves are used effectively by Korean military forces.

My buddy now owns the dojo and is trying to make it a little more traditional.

I then quit and joined a much more traditional Aikido dojo where i couldn't even touch my instructor. If i get more time in the future i'd love to go back to that dojo. The Instructor, a 4th degree, used to use my Kenpo experience as an example for everyone else on how to literally destroy me. Very fluid motions and i could never touch him even if i tried my hardest.

I then left for the Army, took a few Jiu Jitsu courses from the Army (OJT) and became a basic hand to hand instrucor for one of my units. Mostly quick choke and kill techniques.

How does the textual purported claim of Satlyswine's self-defense experience make you chuckle, when you have no data on any of his opponents whether past, present or future?

Statements are hollow and meaningless. It is action which establishes the status of a man, not your YMCA resume or being a substitute instructor for the Coors inebriated southern sleu yokels of our beloved infantrymen. I made a direct challenge in response to an insulting remark, and I was turned down at the opportunity to move forward with it by Satlyswine's lack of testicular fortitude.

So, the next time you want to virtually tongue a man's ***** for stating his extracirricular activities, be sure he's the factually fabulous young man you covet.
