ngk colder plugs gaping question

hey everyone, I just bought 1 step colder plugs at gruppe-s and was wondering if I should gap them. Bought a gaping tool and they seem to be right around spec (.28 fits with just a tad bit of room, .30 is tight). Is this right? I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to gaping. Is there any precaution i should take (ie. my gaping tool when slid in between the center piece and the prong on top touched both sides....) thanks.

bump...I need new plugs but am afraid of screwing them up while gapping them. Also, (sorry to thread jack) would I need to retune if I got 1 step colder plugs?

no need to retune, i didnt, they are simpy "colder" which basically means it safer for us turbo guys, so its not a power thing

i gapped mine at .4 ish, i dont really remember but just gap to factory spec
and the gapping tool is suppose to touch the prong on top like you described, thats how it spaces the plug!

If they're iridiums, don't touch them. You'll most likely snap the tip off, I learned the hard way. If not and you have one of the cheap gappers, use the hole to pull apart the metal piece to ~ .030 and if you go too far, tap it on something solid and it should move in.

However, your gap seems fine and you shouldn't need to adjust them anymore.

Changing spark plug tutorial with pics, in Maintenance & Warranty forum.

If the gap needs to be closed down some, I recommend gently pushing against the side electrode rather than tapping or pounding. You want to avoid cracking the insulator (porcelain).

If you want the stock plugs, search for BKR6EIX, while if you want 1 step colder, look for BKR7EIX.
