according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_Corporation the Metal Zone came out in '91, and by that time they were already using ESP guitars. Maybe they used the orange Boss Distortion pedal back in the day?

Anyway, ESP guitars w/ EMG pickups + distortion from tube amps ftw. Having said that, their guitar tone has sucked since Load.
