I have never pulled the hood release by accident with my foot or legs or foreign objects ever. If you do, you need to adjust how you exit and enter your driver seat.
Essentially you don't need to have a hood release to unhitch the latch on the hood, the release is connected to a cable, the cable is connected to the latch. Depending on how you're grill is, the latch might be more exposed than others. The pull release just creates a pivot so it is easier to pull the cable with the sprung tension. You can probably pop your hood with a flat head if you get the latch in the right place.

+1 mine is similar, and I've had the same happen to me dude, leaving my wagon at my apartments(which is the least sketch place on the peninsula) and after popping my hood/not closing it with some umph and it popped up to like half locked while driving... had to pull over and give it a firm close and it was good to go, definitely check that like rupee mentioned
did you pop the hood last night at all before going in?

Maybe it's the latch? One time I drove my car around and came home went inside for a bit and came out to realize the hood was partially opened. Realized it was probably my hood latch so I greased it up with some lithium grease. I'm assuming my hood popped open when I made a really sharp turn or went over a speed bump. Maybe the same thing happened to you?
