what kinda catback?
I believe when I was a cadet, there is a loophole right now that there is a "Changing exhaust is illegal no matter what" (that was the cvc one I believe you are thinking of) and there was another one that had a db max rating of 95.

I will try and see if I can get ahold of a cop friend I know tonight

But overall you getting pulled over for exhaust is in fact valid.

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

start carrying an SPL meter you... lol...

FWIW, SAE J1169 says meter is to be placed 20 inches away from the tip of exhaust, at a 45 degree angle, and the meter is to be 8 above ground. and then the engine is revved to 75% of max horspower rating.

that last part is the hardest to figure out... lol....

Too funny. Everyone is talking about catbacks being legal, but who here doesn't have a full turboback let alone uppipe and headers? By definition mine is illegal because I have modified the factory emissions even though I still have one cat in place.

Somebody already posted it. But basically it's VC 27151 section A that says it's illegal. But section B says it's legal so long as it's under 95 dB

As for modified emissions, that's a completely different VC.

just correctin his post so i don't have to read confused responses :-)

Yes I meant they are ilegal. Doohh brain fart...
Actually they will let you off up to 96db.

LOL my TXS was like 105db... I never got pulled over.

Now I thought it was two diff tickets. One is mod exhaust and the other one is Mod emissions something?

Is one of them that the ref just measures the noise level if the exhaust and the other they smog your car?

Regards

Nick

it doesn't matter. If the cop wants to be an a**, he'll write u up for a ticket. All u have to do is get it dismissed in court or go to the state ref and get it noise certified. First test is free.

In sum, you're going to get off the ticket when you go to court. I see them in court all the time. Police do that just to give you a hard time.
I could never sacrifice my car's set-up for laws... silly rules. :-)

In CA it is possible to contest a moving violation ticket by mail without ever needing to visit the court. Why not use this same route for exhaust tickets? They ticket you, you send in a letter with a copy of your exhaust receipt and the 50-state certification, the ticket is dismissed, life goes on.

It's all a bunch a crap. Motorcycles can be as loud as they choose, rednecks in PU trucks can have the twin flows dumping from under the bumper. B/c we have sporty Japanese cars we fall under this scrutiny. Hondas gave us all a bad name. F da Ricers!!!

Especially in Fremont. They pulled my stock 2.5RS over once when I got it brand new in Y2K..

Cop: Soo.. Where did you get your car from?

Me: The dealer.

Cop: Oh really? So let me see the engine.

Me: Sure. (pops hood)

Cop: ok. Now what about that exhaust. You know that modified exhausts are illegal?

Me: Oh really? Didn't know that.

Cop: so where did you get this exhaust?

Me: the dealer.

Cop: Somebody sell it to you?

Me: yes. it came with the car.

edit -

Cop: Thats a pretty big wing.

Me: ya it is pretty big.

Cop: where did you get that?

Me: the dealer. (i'm being a "smartass" by this point but telling the truth)

Cop: Ok you can go.

*sigh*....

Well that is soo true.. Harley Davidson riders have been riding with LOUD engines and enhausts for eons. My barber who rides a Harley always told me s*** about the Fremont police giving them the "eye" whenever a group of them passes a parked cop.
