i agree with the help your general area thing, believe me i do which is why i donate my time to volunteer to local things.. like with my church i run food to families that are in a tough time. i also do community clean up stuff, and soup kitchen stuff sometimes.
my thing is, i don't believe in the whole "US, EUROPE, AFRICA" separation.. ya its all legally separated.. but to me people here there or there are all the same people in different spots, and i like to think of the idea of helping people in general.
and my heart is much more for children... adults too, but there is something about the kids in uganda that really hits me. unlike anything and i think you should follow that kinda passion
and the reason i wanna goto Australia, is to check something out for a couple years and come back. so i can't sit on my death bed one day and say "why didn't i check more stuff out".. ya i could goto school in the states somewhere new, but i really want to see different cultures.. and i am considering moving to australia eventually anyways.
this is the exact reason i am gonna sell my wrx and buy an old 4wd subaru loyale wagon eventually and only have like 100 a month insurance. i don't want my car holding me back with 475/month payments, and 418/month insurance lol.

I help out in my community and use my computer abilities. Whether is be for churches or schools or creating a web sites for non profits like www.humboldtsponsors.org to help them out for free as computer help can be pricey (even the simpilist of things).
All in all good for you man. More people need to help out and be a litle less self serving (myself included)

thy neighbor in my scripture is a reference to everyone.. like when said love thy neighbor, it continues to talk about loving everyone.
the bible talks a lot about reaping what you sow. and to help others.. i don't think someone who lives in my town is more important or should get more attention from me than someone across the earth.
its hard for me to put a lot of dedication into our homeless because most of them got that way from bad decisions and don't want to change their lives. just want change.
and i feel a passion and a calling with africa. i can't ignore it.

I think you are making a huge assumption about our homeless people in this country but I respect your opinion and you willingness to do good, where ever it may be. Good luck on your mission and I hope the surfing is as good as I have heard.

im not saying all are like that, but there have been so many times i offered to buy a homeless person food and they turned it down and ask for money and wouldn't tell me why.
i will buy any human food that wants food. but won't give them money directly.
and im not trying to change peoples live in other countries for how i think it should be, im going to bring them food, clean water, build houses, build shelters, build orphanages.
something tells me that the homeless here in the states are far better off than the 5-13yr olds that have to hide in the night from the rebels. they are in fear, hungry, thirsty, homeless... that to me deserves more attention. at least from me. not saying anyone is better than another.. just saying i really really have a soft spot when i think about those kids in uganda living like that.
