I was thinking perhaps with a 300mm f/2.8 with a 2x teleconverter we might be able to catch just a little of the action...
...or you bring a Nikon Fieldscope with a DSLR attachment. The f/12 about it sucks, but the 1m length will certainly get you close enough to the action.
Or, if you REALLY want to be front row, how about this: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/ats/1595820563.html
Much closer, and you'd need a wetsuit, and a board...and the ballz to match.

have fun with all the 30,000 people that r gunna be there. i will be surfing Its or 26th ave in SC if anyone wants to join. Its fun to go to mavericks when theres a contest but to many people for me. i would rather be in the water than watching if its good. maybe i will see some of you around the coast.

I don't feel like going to disneyland where there's no rides and nothing to see without binoculars.

Damn Maverick's comp on a weekend? This is gonna be packed. If you plan to go, get there damn early. I went about 3-4 years ago and had to walk damn near 2-3 miles just to get to the area where you start to go up to the cliffs it was so packed. And this was during a weekday. For those that haven't been, you don't get to sit on the beach and watch. You aren't even allowed to be on the cliffs in front of the break. You are off the right of the break watching from a distance. I'll tell you, it's worth it though. I'll post pics up from that event, they are at home. I took it with a crappy 3.2 megapixel point and shoot and you still can get a sense for how big the waves were.
