me and whitt are engaged... neither of us really want anything fancy... and no one's really coming from my family's side since they all live in Montreal and are afraid to fly. lol so we figured... have a kick-*** engagement party. since we're both car geeks, it'll probably be at a race track. we figured it would be a good way to get our friends to meet eachother. but seriously f-ck having the almighty wedding. after all.. the wedding is for the couple.. not for the family. at least thats what me and dan figure.

That settles it - I am having an "Asian marriage" next time. Sounds too good to pass up.

I was married in '97 in Santa Rosa with 4 bride's maids & dates.
I paid for all tux rentals & Mrs Oaf paid for her (very beautiful) dress.
Formal wedding at Saint Rose church with reception for 150 + people.
Open bar with free beer, wine, and bubbly. I even brewed/bottled up 7 cases of wedding beer to pass out as wedding trinkets.
Served chicken, steak, & fish.
DJ and photographer...and we got the negatives!
Partied all day/night.

All total...less than $6k....and paid cash.
More important, the Mrs & I experienced very little stress during the entire planning phase & had the wedding we both wanted.

That's pretty odd (and assuming) thing to say: "self-esteem" issues?

My wife and I had 300+ people at our wedding, over a 1/3 were from out of town. My wife is an event planner by trade and we are both incredibly generous... in the case of our wedding she was more than I. It was so important for her that everyone have a great time and be well taken care of. That is why we spent so much money, really. Making sure the food was perfect. Making sure everyone had transportation and a guest packet with snacks, etc. We paid for various peoples tux's and transportation (including plane trips and parking at the reception... ~$500 right there for 100 cars) and even some folks hotel rooms, among other things. Oh, and we had it in San Francisco, not Santa Rosa... where getting a room to fit 300+ is juuuust a bit more expensive if you want a nice hall ( we had it at the Miyako Radisson, which isnt the ritziest place in town anyway). Even crappy food is more than $20 a plate.

When all was said and done it was $38,000. It was an AWESOME day and everyone was so thankful and so happy and we got so many compliments with people saying how well accommadated they were and how great everything was. It wasn't just a meal after a wedding. it truly was an Event in one of the most beautifil cities in the world... and to do that, you pay for it.

Sure we coulda done it cheaper. I doubt we could have gotten away with less than $20,000 for the numbers we had within San Francisco. But we had already gone pretty cheap for the food and the accomadations. The only way to make it cheaper would have been to remove all the little niceties which add up quickly. But that would've just taken away from how well we wanted everyone to feel cared for... which I can't see being confused with self-esteem issues.

Oh wait, we did splurge on one thing. We stayed at a suite in the 4 seasons for our wedding night. Damn, the other half life NICE

That's great that you could afford such an extravagance. It's just that MOST people can't afford to have a wedding like that, AND start out on the right foot financially.

While it worked out in your case, it would be FOOLISH for a couple to do that if it would burden them with debt for many years to come. I often hear of people who are paying for their weddings 5+ years after the fact, and often after a divorce.

Additionally, that kind of unsecured debt would hurt MOST new couples chance of buying a home as well.

All true.. .some points to note that make our (my wife's and my) case different is that we''re older (29 & 34) and we've both got careers. We stayed engaged for just about 18 months and were able to put away $1000-$2000 per month, along with a dip into some inheritance money for the rest and the honeymoon.

Most younger people don't have the careers settled in, nor do they have the patience to stay engaged for that long... and we were celibate during our engagement... now THATS patience

I just proposed this weekend so my ... ooh ... fiancee and I, are now engaged. I'm just waiting for her to drop the celibacy bomb on me. If she does that we're getting married TOMORROW.

We looked at some more fancy options.. getting married on a boat on Tahoe.. etc..

But ended up getting married in Grandmas backyard (it was a nice yard). My uncle married us, he's a preacherman.. Her uncle took the pictures, he's a pro. My Mom did the flowers. The best part was we saved a ton of money and had all the space we needed so we didn't have to worry about how many people were coming.. we just invited everyone.

Will be 13 years ago next week.... Sometimes I wish my uncle hadn't showed up. Marriage is so overrated.
