Marriage...
Marriage is a beautiful thing and marks the beggining of a relationship till the end of time.
Here's some advice for those thinking about marriage... Don't listen to anyone! Pack your bags for Vegas or Tahoe and get hitched before there's any mention of a formal wedding to ANYONE!!!1!1one1!!
Let's just say i could have paid off my car with the amount of money i've spent so far and we're pretty tight with our money. We even kept the guest list down to 50 people so keep costs down.
It's all capitalism in the end and a ring on the finger is still a ring on the finger.
That is all...

Congrats man, and good luck.
if that's what the Bride also agrees on, go for it. my older brother and his wife went that route, his idea not hers. to date, they both regret doing it that way.
For Dawn and I, we'd both wanted a formal type wedding, but ours wasn't nearly as expensive as anyone who attended thought it was. PM me if you want any advice on how to keep costs down.

I'm glad my girl is Mexican and wants to do things their way. Appearantly, they assign "Godparents" for every aspect of the wedding. One set to get the dress, one for the cake, one for the hall, one for the flowers, etc etc. She said all in all we'd only hafta put out about 3-4k for a huge formal wedding. I love traditions

I think I got off easy in term of cash spent. My wife didn't want anything fancy. Just a nice ceremony with the people that are important to us. We had a sort of "it's a small world" thing going on. We asked everyone to wear traditional cultural garb from their country of origin. It took a lot of attention away from the fact that we didn't spend a whole lot on the wedding. Everyone had tons of fun.
My in-laws were a friggin nightmare, though. Didn't want anything to do with the planning until 2 weeks before and then wanted to change everything and invite more people...
My favorite quote from them, the day before the wedding, "You are ruining this day for US". Bunch of selfish bastards... They were trying to make it all about them because they ran away and never had a "traditional" wedding. This was "their" wedding...
Good thing we left empty tables, because they invited 50+ people at the last minute that we didn't even know...
Oh, and congrats, man. That is awesome!!!

It was in a hall at a park. We had a buffet of mostly Chinese food, some Japanese food (mad hookup with a guy call Ichiro in EG that had a place called Sushi # Ichi).
We rented plates/silverware and everyone served themselves buffet style.
No alcohol made all the difference. Water and Martinelli's. The favors were chopsticks wrapped in ribbon, and my wife made the center peices for like maybe $4 each...
Decorations were paper lanterns, ribbon, all from like the Dollar store or something. Like I said though, no one noticed how little we spent because the food was good and everyone was talking to each other about thier outfits!!! hahhahaha!!!
Yeah, 5 extra tables because we knew not to trust her parents when we asked, "is that all the people you invited?" (without invitations). Luckily the hall was big so there was plenty of room for the extra tables that would have been empty space.
It was easy because of the buffet style. If we would have had caterers/waiters with a set headcount, we would have been screwed.
Again congrats!

This isn't directed at Salty:
If you are anything but the uber rich, you got serious self-esteem issues spending $20K or more for a friggin' wedding.
I was married in '97 in Santa Rosa with 4 bride's maids & dates.
I paid for all tux rentals & Mrs Oaf paid for her (very beautiful) dress.
Formal wedding at Saint Rose church with reception for 150 + people.
Open bar with free beer, wine, and bubbly. I even brewed/bottled up 7 cases of wedding beer to pass out as wedding trinkets.
Served chicken, steak, & fish.
DJ and photographer...and we got the negatives!
Partied all day/night.
All total...less than $6k....and paid cash.
More important, the Mrs & I experienced very little stress during the entire planning phase & had the wedding we both wanted.
