Almost all the humanities and social science majors apply to almost all the same jobs...doesn't matter which one you are, it matters how you sell yourself at an interview...now sciences, math, and engineering, that's another story...

I went to DVC from 97-99 and then transferred to San Jose State. I started off taking Psych classes and then switched to Sociology. This degree has gotten me all sorts of interviews from Social work/counseling and human resources to financial planning and loan officer. The degree does open the door to many diferent opportunites, however they don't pay much. Unless you get a commision based sales type job. So, in my experience it hasn't mattered what degree I had to apply for and get these jobs but if I would have went into something else I would have been able to apply for higher paying jobs.

ive met so many people who have jobs that has nothing to do with their college degrees, its kinda scary. that being said, just get your degree in whatever, and be prepared for interviews.

You need a masters at least for being a university professor. You MIGHT be able to get by at a community college with a BA...

hahaha "player hating degree" I'm using that one from now on, thanks!

Anyways, here's the truth: It doesn't matter what you major in. Any adult on this forum who's in his 40's, 50's, who did a humanities major will tell you that your major might determine your first job, that's about it.

Ok, it matters, but there are far more important factors to what you do in life than what you major in. First off, WHAT ARE YOUR SKILLS? I put that in caps b/c that is pretty important. I've got a friend who majored in idustrial engineering...he's working for Lockheed Martin writing code. Why? Because he took some CS classes, and all his internships after his frosh, soph, junior year were code-development related. Lockheed Martin knew that he had experience and could hit the ground running although he was an econ major. It would take more than the fingers I have to count the number of electrical, and mechanical engineering majors I know/know of whose first job after college was an associate investment banker for like CSFB, Merryl Lynch, MSDW. (The job starts at 80g's a year if you can hit your bonus potential, 50k salary + 30k bonus, and even the dumbest drunk frat boy I know has hit that bonus) Although I-banking recruitment works HEAVILY with the fraternity system in getting your foot in the door, so good luck if you're a transfer student, and a non-greek. But just for the hell of it, I'll comment that I-banking is one of the only ways to climb up the big $$$ business ladder w/o an MBA.

So if you decide to major in sociology, don't just take the 50 units and then slack off and take like... human sexuality courses or whatever. DO SOMETHING. Take courses that give you skills, especially skills that you need college for. Example: screw programming classes. My roomates a CS genius and there're a bunch of languages he doens't know. But he doesn't care, because if you understand programming paradigms and compilers, you should be able to learn any programming language in like, a day. A lot of things (machining, circuit design, microcontrollers, programming) you can learn on your own time. It's a waste of units to take it in college unless you just feel like it.

Alright I've ranted meaninglessly for a long time so I'll give you the bottom line to my advice: You've just transfered so you'd only got 2 years of university education. So you should really do research into the kinds of classes offered, the course progressions, talk to advisors, fellow students, EVERYONE, and figure out how to study your **** off and make the best use of your time. The key point is getting a GOOD internship this coming summer, as it will be your last summer in college. So I would recommend taking a crapload of courses this year (but more importantly, getting good grades b/c you want to show that even though you went to a community college, you can handle university work) and get a good summer job and use as a stepping stone to your future career.

good luck, and do the research and THINK about everything before you do it,
Ambert
