ive been using linux for about 10yrs, as a some what experienced user in it.. going to ubuntu was very nice. highly customizable and it works so damn seamlessly. updates, wireless, everything.

it's worth throwing on an older computer just to play with. not to mention the library of free applications is endless.

firefox keeps crashing
system running incredibly slow

and this is ALL of a sudden. I cannot figure out why when i boot up things are at a stall for speed. Literally if i open finder.. it takes about 30 seconds to a minute to load up the viewer then to display the contents. There were no signs of this slowly building up.. it just happened one day.

I ran a test on the harddrive and it seems healthy. (at least as far as the test could tell)

And as for firefox, I have no ideas I tried removing it then reinstalling it but no fix.

Any thoughts here?
Maybe because it's a Mac?

Yea get some advice with the work you're doing. And by far Macs are so much better than a PC. I just wish the software was 100% compatible when switching back n' forth from windows.

I've just just begun using linux and Ubuntu is such a great way to get into it. I have it installed on my laptop and prefer it much more than windows. I just hate it when I run into an issue and don't have internet access

I'm a CS major focusing on unix and would love to have some tech support if ever need be. How bout it?

Btw, I'm willing to bet the issue with your MAC was because of a failing hard disk. Sometimes hard disks slow down dramatically before they die and in some cases, can not be detected until it is damaged further. I work for an IT group at a pretty good sized tech company and have been doing this stuff since I was old enough to stick a fork in a wall socket. (Yes, I did this) I'm willing to bet the awesome flash of light is what made me who I am today.

The real beauty of Mac OS X is in the BSD core. Open up a console and type "top" and see what's taking up all your resources.

believe me i understand the situation with the marketshare i was saying that reasoning back when i was a mac hater. then i saw how much better macs worked over all and said "**** it, it'll be at least 10yrs or more before apple even comes close to windows market share"

the funniest part is, it's actually easier to **** a macs day up. the security on a mac absolutely sucks and its entire "security" relies on it maintaining a medium to low market share.

i could find an article somewhere, where they ran insane tests on osx, ubuntu, windows, openbsd, freebsd and mac got owned hard even by windows vista.

but point is right now that is very unlikely to happen in the real world. because a mac does not have nearly as much virus' floating around.
yea i know that eventually in a job in the future, ill be ending up using a mac. o well, its good to have both worlds sometimes i guess for specific reasons
