From what I've read that is a consideration. There is a lot of land that NUMMI blocked development on for one reason or another. Something approaching 150 acres. There is a lot of potential for all of that land plus what the plant actually sits on. Housing, shopping, baseball stadium, etc.
It sucks that they're closing the facility, but the potential is there for good things. At least Fremont makes out alright. I just worry about the surrounding areas as I mentioned before.

About the only that I could see going in there is a football/baseball stadium but that was nixed already.
Someone would have to be willing to buy all the land then either destroy or gut the nummi complex. EXPENSIVE.
That's gonna be an empty eyesore for a long LONG time.

I'm sure if the building stands that SOMEONE will use it.
Won't be at all surprised if Lockheed-Martin steps in for manufacturing. After all they have a $150-Billion backlog right now.

In case you all haven't heard...
not necessarily surprising, but it makes it even tougher for the Bay Area and the Central Valley with Nummi closing.

Other refuted me saying that Toyota wouldn't do that to the bay area. But GM did it, so why wouldn't toyota?
The more we want to price ourselves out of the labor market, the less labor jobs we will have. Unions only make it worse, which is why GM said they will be pulling out on the 31st of august (i believe) way back in like May or June. Toyota is affected with the slump in sales as well, so they have to reduce their costs as well.
It's too bad that Telsa is too small to purchase such a facility, but boy do I wish I could. NUMMI plant could be the first big fall of the commercial/industrial real estate in our area. I wonder who owns it and what they plan to do with that property... The longer it sits the more the value will plummet.
Wish out govt would understand that cutbacks lead to survival, and not spending, but that for another thread I guess.
10,000 people losing their jobs, in 11.5% unemployment (rising), is going to put more people into delinquency on their homes, cars, and other things.
I feel bad for anyone buying DJI stocks, they will more than likely lose in the coming 2-3 months. I see the DJI crashing downwards again by the end of the year. not to mention banks, big time we will see more banks folding.
He puts pressure on our legislature to make the cuts they don't want to make and to raise the taxes we much make. What he cannot do is kick out all our ****ty, greedy representatives. They are the ones who make the laws, and are ****ing everything up.
To use Arnold as a scape goat is stupid. Just like blaming Grey Davis for the energy crisis when it was Enron's shady dealings. Grey Davis just wasn't bright enough to see past it and was recalled due to getting the blame on energy crisis.
Don't blame Arnold. He got the ***** to make tough decisions that aren't popular with people on the left or the right. We HAVE to make huge cuts, and we HAVE to raise taxes. It's too bad that he isn't powerful enough to REFORM our way of government and spending, cause that's what we REALLY need to do, and the people in CA aren't willing to do it. It's really OUR fault, not his.
Developing right now is probably not in that many people's mind. There are a TON of empty corporate buildings and offices in the fremont area as well as residential.

Wow, Nummi plant has transmission power, much cheaper than the more normal distribution power. They are the largest single consumer of electricity in the bay area.
If they keep the electrical switch yard, that is a good reason to take over the plant, 1/2 price electricity. Even if they don't use that huge ammount, the price is still the same since it's from the transmission lines and not the distribution lines.
Sad to see it go.
