Unhappy Just announced: Toyota to halt production at Nummi

In case you all haven't heard...

not necessarily surprising, but it makes it even tougher for the Bay Area and the Central Valley with Nummi closing.

The plant supports more than 1,000 suppliers throughout California. The closure could have a ripple effect on as many as 50,000 people, according to Friends of Nummi, a group formed to try to keep the plant open.

Sucks for the people that work at that plant, I hread that Toyota might buy the plant because we don't have that many left in the US...

from the people I know at the plant, the drawbacks to this plan is that NUMMI is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) plant that Toyota operates in North America. To get it with new and more updated equipment, it would take much more investment from Toyota, beyond buying the plant.

They've already got a plant in Mississippi (or whatever, it's in the south) that they haven't yet officially opened. It's already built and supposed to build the Prius. Since the Prius and Corolla are similarly sized, it appears production could shift over there. Also, logically, Tacoma production could shift to Texas.

Then, since NUMMI is the only Toyota operated plant with UAW workers...well, i think it's obvious that Toyota would rather operate with a non-union plant. Not saying it's better or worse, or costs be different, just that it appears that this is their MO.

Wow. With NUMMI gone, i think they said there is no more auto production West of the Rockies. U.S. is losing production capacity, and that's not a good thing.

sorry for the essay!

I knew that NUMMI was projected to be closed, but I didn't know that the Great Mall in Milpitas used to be a Ford Motor Plant.

Yeah. My first car was a '67 Mustang that was built there. Kind of cool, actually.

My cousin was a manager there and left about nine months ago. He knew it was going to happen.

He estimated that about 8,000 to 10,000 jobs will be affected by this. It's not just the workers at the plant but all the suppliers, partners, etc that are associated with it.

damn i work for FED-EX and most people just have no idea how many local jobs will be effected!

they out source a lot of manufacturing to other local facitlities thats only purpose is to put together certain components (fuel tanks, frames, interior insulation, relays, wiring, windows, ect...) all those places are more then likely going to loose there contracts and forced to either close or reduce the work force.

they out source locally to make sure the components are able to ship and arrive overnight and in some cases SAME day!

this is seriously sad for cali.

This is a really bad sign for california. The government is running businesses out of the state. They keep making it more and more expensive for companies to operate in the state so they leave. It's been a common thing for a few years now for folks to pack up and move production to states like washington and idaho for example where taxes are cheaper and wages are lower.

At the place I used to work one of our largest clients based out of monterey up and moved to washington... hell the had monterey in their name.

This is going to cost the city of fremont a lot of money and put a lot of people out of work. California sucks. If things keep going like this california is gonna have enough empty houses to house all of the homeless in america because everyone will be leaving.

hell I LOVE california and we've talked about going to canada, vegas or washington a few times.

Really? There is a big ford collage at the food court entrance. My grandpa worked there until it closed, then he went to NUMMI until he retired.

I remember before they built the great mall it was just a huuuuuuuge empty lot. Hundreds if not thousands of people used to go there and watch fireworks on the 4th of July.

They probably are projecting, like many other car companies, sales are going to tumble, and tumble horribly. People rushed in to get their cars because of cash for clunkers. The Auto industry is about to see the bust of that stupid deal.
