I would not count it out yet...

Toyota is not just a car company, they have a system, a almost way of life called "TPS", we here in the US call it "lean". Part of that philosophy is that they don't let their employees go. I think we will see toyota do some magic with the place, wait and see.

LOL no.. but I suspect they may shift it into a motor only build, and make the motors for most their vehicles there. I also suspect they may start to crank out the diesel motors used in their delivery trucks (can't remember the name right now) made in southern CA.

It's gonna suck around here if that plant closes. It's 4000+ in-house jobs alone let alone contractors ect...

I really hope Toyota can do something - the delivery trucks are from the "Hino" brand.

Don't really think we can blame CA on this one. GM was a partner and pulled out of Nummi a few months ago which is really what has caused the major problem here.

There are too many cars for people. There are 3-4 cars per house. There is no need for extra cars, and hence the idea that this will be closing. Take those jobs that will be lost, throw them somewhere that will be the future...

When I say future, I mean the future. US is going to have to compete in a tough market (due to the retarded idea of unions/minimum wage) in order to sell things cheaper that is made here.

For example most of the stuff that china sends over. Could be cups, could be furniture, could be clothes. US has to be able to compete, or more of the same will happen.

yes that will mean most people will have to work for less, but that's what happens when the global economy is trying to balance itself out. Americans have been living beyond the means, and this is one way of purging what isn't needed, and hopefully someone will invest in things that will be needed.

Government takeover of GM isn't just the end of GM, it'll move other car companies out of the way. Same thing goes with healthcare vs private insurances and the whole lot of things the government is trying to implement.

Being that Arnold was about as qualified as my cat to be Governor I'm not surprised at this mess.

Imagine if had someone with actual political experience / expertise heading this state instead of a guy who holds special elections on legislation no one wants

Toyota has already said they will slash production globally by almost 1 million units. They know they're not selling the amount of cars they once did. NUMMI closing isn't a huge suprise after GM left. It sucks, and it's a shock but it could be seen coming.

Fremont tried to get them to stay via incentives. Nothing worked. The actual city of Fremont won't hurt too bad. There are plans for the land already which will continue to bring property taxes. Because NUMMI didn't actually sell anything most of the revenue was based on taxes. That won't go anywhere as long as they can get someone else on the land.

The surrounding cities and businesses are where the materials come from and the workers live. Those cities will be hit much, much harder by this. The bay area is going to be hurting for a while over this whole thing. I think the prediction of close to 50k people most directly hurt is accurate. With thousands upon thousands more feeling it as well.

I wonder if anyone will consider the site as a new home for the A's?
