jury duty...
i got summon for jury duty aswell, and im planning on postponing it to like christmas or something, i doubt they will reply back to me since its a holiday. (did this few years ago before)
i think it also has to do with which county you are in. when i used to be in SF, I got the notice once a year. but after I moved to SJ, I got my first notice after almost 3 years living here.
Definitely do not just ditch it. If you start school April 30th, chances are they'll let you out. The last time I was called in, they said it was going to be a criminal trial, and that it could take up to 21 business days, which would be about a month. Also, it isn't like the trial is going to start right then and there, so explain to them that you're going to be in school by then. Realize though, that you won't be able to say any of this until voir dire, where the attorneys will start with 12 potential jurors, and keep eliminating them one at a time. When you first get called to be in one of the 12 seats, the judge will ask you if there is any reason you shouldn't serve, and this is the time to tell him about your school situation. Realize though, that the first day is just like taking attendance, where they just make sure everyone who got a notice shows up, and only take excuses from people with extreme financial hardships. The other people who have other excuses have to wait until voir dire. This process can take several days, so be prepared for that, since they start with 12, eliminate one at a time, until they get 12 jurors that neither side opposes.

yep... I was dismissed from my last jury duty, but I had to sit there until they got all 12 + 1 backup. I made the mistake of not bring a book on my first day.
o, check with your court house, they had free wireless where I was so I was able to work while I waited to be call to the court room.
