well, turns out this issue is now not an issue at all. after starting the formal process, they low-balled me on the offer making it not attractive at all.
Burning Bridges = VERY BAD, it may come back to haunt you, when you look for another job. Most industries are pretty small and you tend to bump into the same people every few years. Remember, that when someone does good for you, you may tell one or two people ... but when someone screws you, you'll tell anyone and everyone who will listen. Your employeer/coworkers, could trash your name and you could run up against that later.
I think your contract employer will appreciate the respect you give to your current employer, by giving them two weeks notice. Because if you jump ship for more money here and now, what's to say that he'll won't a be victim, if you're offered more money somewhere else later.
You should also take into consideration the health benefits costs and the fact that some policies won't allow you to draw from it, until you put X months into the plan first.

Burning bridges is a term used when you've actually worked somewhere for a while...ie...5 to 10 years. 18 months is nothing.
Tell your current boss that a better opportunity came along and that you have to think of your financial situation (family/house/car/gf/dying granny/whatever). Tell them that you will do your best to ease the transition for them, and you feel bad about leaving without enough notice. Unless they are total morons (in which case who cares what they think), they will either 1.) understand and be fine with it, or 2.) offer you more money to keep you.
If they don't do 1 or 2, f*ck them.
-=Eric, who's about to ask for more money, and if the answer is no...quit.

I understand what Steve was getting at, but I think with the right language to your current boss you can hint that you need more money, and that you will try to help them in the transition. I'd give notice today.
Good luck senor!

for the record, i've been at my current place for 3 years. the 18 months job security is the contract we're going to be starting shortly. anyway, it's now a moot point because i'm not going to leave what I have for what was offered to me officially today.
i look forward to that day. it'll be soooo much fun.
p.s. i got a lot of votes for being a whiney beeyotch. i was one of em, who are teh other 4?
