Got a job offer. Not sure what to do.
Kim and I both got very good job offers in Honolulu.
I am seriously considering moving down there and got some q's for you all.
1. What is the average price to rent a house? Somewhere near Honolulu. Something new. Something with AC.
I forgot who's house me and Shiv went about a year ago for the tuning. Something like that. ~ of couse.
2. Can I bring my cars and keep CA plates on them?
3. I wanna hear from people who moved from the mainland to HI. Did you guys "convert" ok?
4. Dog. How hard is it to bring the dog over to HI?
5. Will I survive constant partying at Erin's bar?
Anything else I need to know?
Please gimme some feedback, guys, as this is muy importante.

Hmm...
Also, when I say "near", I don't mean within walking distance. I am used to Bay Area traffic and few dozen minutes on a jammed highway will not make a diff to me.
Thanks for the input...

Alex, have you heard the phrase..."It's a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.".....?
If you are from here or have family here it would be great. I have loved my time here in Hawaii but when it's my time to leave I won't be too sad.
I'm looking forward to real race tracks and snow.

Alex, IMO from people I spoke with who moved from the mainland to Hawaii, their first concern is finding a job. Since you already have a job offer, make sure its a high enough paying job to live in Hawaii. Not sure about how LA is like but Hawaii has a pretty high cost of living.
I wouldn't really consider Jayson's(Rexstang's) house, which is located in Ewa, to be really close to town. The close to town places are really like in my area which is the Kaimuki-Kahala area. I wouldn't really want to live in Kalihi if you bring your monster rex over. Further away from town from my area would be the Hawaii Kai - Nui Valley - Koko Head area which is a bit more wealthier areas.
Regarding your dogs, I have heard things about the outdated laws about quarrantine to be rather long and outdated. Nothing really bad about it, just outdated.

Wow, this is a toughie. I *LOVE* Hawaii (it's my home after all) but this question comes at a time when I'm very strongly considering moving to the mainland to jumpstart my life.
Hawaii is a hard place to do "big things". It's beautiful and the people ROCK though.

Hmm...
So do you guys think I can rent a "newer" house somewhere "near" for under 2k?
How much $ is good enough to live in HI per year? ~?
My move will be for ~ 1.5 years.

I'd have to agree with Dan about Hawaii is a nice place to visit, but living here is something completely different.
As long as you have a job lined up and the pay is good, you have one of the big hurdles out of the way. Hawaii high cost of living and lower than the mainland wages. As they say "It is the price of paradise."
I think DaveWRX would have some great insight into this subject since he basically went through the whole moving to Hawaii thing.

Here are a few links for partly furnished houses for rent, hope this helps. There are probably more listing through realtors, at least this give you a good idea of what is available.
Kailua is another area that is nice, I would consider it far from town. Since you are used to long mainland commutes it would be a short trip for you.
Brandon
Hawaii Kai - Portlock
Kahala
Manoa, Punahou - University
Kailua

Kailua is a GREAT place to live (ok ok I've lived there most of my life)
Some people feel its "far" from town but in reality, it isn't. It probably has the most consistent travel times of anywhere on the island (25-35min except between 630-730a). The advantage is its away from town, but not that far away. Whats funny is I cant remember anyone thats lived in the kailua area a couple yrs that would choose another part of the island over it.
But its not always the easiest place to find housing. There's always a high demand (and not many new homes being built) for housing in the area. When you combine that with the ridiculous rise in home prices the last year or two your choices do narrow.

Kailua usually doesn't have that bad of traffic even in high traffic times. The area is very self dependent and also quiet. I'd live there to retire
