I got state reffed
#63
One thing that always concerned with owning an STI, what if an officer uknowningly sent me to a ref just because he though it was modified. My car is stock, but I could see how someone with no car knowledge could mistake it for modified.

well, when I got reffed, the CHP hand a binder with TABs on every car. Docs, pics, specs, etc.
He tabbed right to Subaru, WRX, STi.
They had a pic of the ej motor. He looked down at my gen, looked at the picture, looked down again, looked up at the sky, looked at me, looked down again, looked at me, and said something like. "Does this thing even belong in here"
I said, "What thing bro"
he said "This Engine..., its obviously not legal, it doesn't even look like the picture"
He whipped out his ticket pad. ref'd me.
He was a cool cop though...I could tell in his eyes he didn't want to ref me. He said he wouldn't pull me over again if he saw me that day, and if anyone else had a problem to radio him and he'd clear me for the day.
It was weird.

Might be possible to challenge the REF violation on the basis that the officer was not properly trained to identify illegal modifications. It won't fly if the officer has a book with pictures, but if he doesn't.

Probably what happened with me, just pass the state ref and the judge will usually throw it out since you fixed the problem. Sounds like he didn't get the fix it fine for the SMOG though.

Congrats Nick!! Now, keep the ****ing front plate on there, the window tint off, and get back to enjoying your STi.
