For those of you who street race I just don't get it.

You have so much ligitimate racing available in this area it does not make any sense to race on the street.

If you want to drag race, you have sears point, and sacramento. You have at least one track day a month at some of the best racetracks the US has to offer, and you have at least 5 different autocross clubs active in the region, plus a growing Rally crowd.

Every time I go drag racing in "this area" I have to kill at least 1/2 a work day so that I can burn at least 1/2 a tank of gas in just the commute to and from the track. That's so... what's the word? Convenient? not.

And, yes, its better in the SFBA than it is for many others around the country. Unfortunately for me, other people having an even worse situation than we do doesn't actually change my situation. What it comes down to is this: to run on a Wednesday Night Drags at Sears it costs me over $200 (time off, gas, fees). Why is Sears out in BFE? Sac I can understand. Its central to a very spread out population. But Sears is on the edge, across the water and a few bridges from the majority of the SFBA.

There's no real solution to this. It doesn't pay anymore to just build a drag strip and in the US if you can't get NASCAR to run on your track you can't get diddly. I realize we're stuck with the lousy choices we have (What? We have some of the best tracks in the country? Have you ever been to the East Coast?), but let's not lie to ourselves.

Whether you feel street racing is OK or not, our current facilities are certainly not enough to satisfy the racing-bug.

Hahaha...well I don't know why...this street racing thing really sets me off. I guess if people would just ADMIT that they are endangering others, and are choosing to do it anyway, I'd be less annoyed. It's just those folk that have the "invincibility" complex that really get to me.

Actually, it's kind of a good excuse. Driving is a privilege, racing is a luxury (in the grand scheme of things), and so convenience plays a significant role.

When I say "good excuse" I don't mean that it justifies street racing, I mean that a cheaper, closer, and more convenient legal drag strip may indeed bring more kids off the street.

But street racing is never going to go away, at least not until all our cars are govt-controlled through GPS

MP,

You read me all wrong, man. I didn't defend street racing. I just bagged on trying to say that we have it so good with the tracks closest to us. The truth is we really don't, so its a bad argument to say our local tracks can curb this behavior. I do agree with you thought, if we actually had local tracks it would curb this behavior.

I think street racing is stupid... and I've done some stupid things.

I don't have a problem with the light-to-light race. Guys who weave in and out of traffic to get ahead on the streets, now that is truly stupid. (Yes, I've been guilty of it and its always been road rage related). What I feel is the worst is the high speed freeway racing and the worst of that is doing it in anything other than an empty freeway. (i've been guilty of that too After a close call, I don't do it anymore. Thank God or merciful warnings.)

Every Mt. Hamilton, every Skyline run, where you've gone over the speed limit or rotated your vehicle by under or oversteer, etc. is guilty of fostering stupidity. All I am saying is:

We do it. Its who we are. It happens. Its a fact. We shouldn't go around worshipping it in posts like the beginning of this thread. But lets not rip on at eachother in a two faced way.

And you are right, but it goes both ways. People who do any sort of street racing need to be honest with themselves (and us) about the dangers, just as much as the people who bag on "those other people" who street race need to be honest with themselves about how they use the throttle on the streets.

I grew up in CT. I don't want to leave this area because of the huge availability of ligitimate amature racing available in this area.

From Santa Cruz, I have within a 4 hour drive Sears point (track and drag strip) sacramento, thunder hill, buttonwillow, Laguna seca, and at least 5 different autocross clubs who run 10 -> 15 events each per season.

Within an 8 hour drive I have track days available at Fontana speedway, Las vegas, reno ( http://www.openroadracing.com/ ), a hill climb and rally events up north.

Show me anywhere else in the US where I can have all these opportunities available year round and I will move there.

Jason, you don't realize how good we have it here in CA.

In CT, within a 4 hour drive, I can think of only 1 drag strip, and a handful of 1/8 mile oval tracks and of course, lime rock.

Acually if you think about it...a lot of people do things that endanger people....EVERYDAY.

Drugs, drink, smoking, drive FAST, drive too SLOW, J walk, go to sport events...get all pissed and destroy cities, Some poeple get violent when they listen to different types of music. MANY things bring harm to people!!!! If you think about it.

How many times do seople say "stop smoking", "Stop getting drunk", "slow down", and this is my favorite:
"WHY THE HELL ARE YOU MERGING ON THE FREEWAY AT 40 MPH"??!!!.

Are these people going to stop.....I dont think so. If we are going to get pissed at 1 person...you might as well get pissed at everyone. They are going to pay the price for thier actions some day....sad but true.

I know this is a bit extreme...but hey, I have been sick since last week and I am BORED!!
