How would you describe wheel bearing noise?
Hi folks,
I just came back from JGTC and on my way back, on 5, I was going a little faster than usual. I was at 100 mph and I heard this horrible squeal. It's like a train slammed on the brakes, you know, the metal stopping metal noise.
As you can tell, I don't drive that fast very often, so at 80, 90, no noise, but it's almost automatic when I reach 100. Could this be the infamous wheel bearing noise? BTW, it seems to be coming from the driver front. I did this 3 times on my way back and all 3 times, I was able to get that noise to replicate itself.
I checked most of the threads regarding this issue here, but I really don't think it's the brakes, since it doesn't make any noise whatsoever when I hit the brakes, oh and the brake indicator noise is a little sharper, higher pitched than the noise I am hearing.
Does anyone know what that noise is? Does anyone of this make sense?
How can I ask the Dealership folks to try this out? Ask them go to 100?
Anyway, TIA for any info.

Are you sure it's not the infamous "wind squeal" from the external/sideview mirrors? Fold 'em in and do what you were doing (I'm not endorsing you driving above the speed limit, however) and see if the noise goes away.
Most wheel bearings groan/growl when going bad...

It's gonna be hard for me to try it again going that fast...I don't drive much nowadays. I am only worried because I only have 3 more months of warranty, that's why I want to get rid of any problems within this 3 months.
If it's not the bearings, then I don't really have anything to worry about...but the mirror squeal is new to me. That's a pretty scary squeal though.

My front left wheel bearing was slowly dying and it sounded much like the tire was rubbing
on the fender well plastic. A very low sound, nothing high pitched. It would also vary with
speed, the faster the wheel spun, the higher the pitch. But even at 80 it was still what I would
consider low.
