I could go to town with this, but since you're an animal lover, I'll cut you some slack, Pete...

I saw a guy yesterday with a 16 year old dog in a toddlers stroller type device walking it out and about without the use of its back legs, it just pulled itself along with it's front legs and wheels....I'll be the same in 10 years with my border collie...she means the world to me.

W3rd. They are our little humans.
I saw it happen to a horse at the Salinas Rodeo. They have a little race with quarter horses, and one broke its leg, they covered it with a tarp and killed it. It happened to a horse I used to ride too, but luckily I wasn't there to see it.

remember BARBARO? the almost triple crown winner?
you think the owner wanted to put the horse to death?
the owners spent $$$ trying to repair the break. they knew even if the break did heal, that barbaro would never race again, but in stud fees, that's where the MILLIONS would be made.
i think it was the SMITHSONIAN magazine last month did a story on barbaro's story.
when a horse lays down, it is bad for their organs. that's why during barbaro's rehab, he was on harness that literally lifted his body as he started to walk again. but even that harness is bad since it puts weight on the internal organs. so they limited him being on that harness.
in the end, the break broke again and a decision was made to put him down...
sad, but it's a fact of life.

If he had been just another mediocre horse, they would've given him the tarp-and-injection treatment on the spot just like they do with the other ones. The horse racing industry is incredibly cruel, and the horses are treated like disposable commodities.
I find it sad also when people keep animals alive when they are in great discomfort because they can't stand to lose them. When I worked at a vet hospital people would be putting their pets through all these uncomfortable/painful procedures and illnesses when all you want to say to them is, dude it's time to say goodbye. Never an easy decision.
on a lighter note, we should have a meet/puppy play date sometime and we can all bring our dogs! I used to bring my dog to meets with me when I had one, but now I have two so it's a little tougher.
