When those horses "break a leg", it doesn't mean that they literally break the leg... It could mean that the horse has a small fracture, which is common amongst horse racing... So when that little fracture occurs, guess what happens? They kill the horse. It's a living, breathing, animal... These stupid races cause these tiny fractures and then life is lost.
Witnessing it first hand is something that I don't wish upon anyone. They do it right away... Cover the horse with a tarp, and inject it... Thats it! Death row for you horse! That's f'ed up.
That is my rant for the day.

the reason most horse are put to death is because when they break, it is close to impossible to repair.
and since horses cant sleep like other animals (or humans) by laying down, they cant balance on 3 (or less) legs.
remember BARBARO? the almost triple crown winner?
you think the owner wanted to put the horse to death?
the owners spent $$$ trying to repair the break. they knew even if the break did heal, that barbaro would never race again, but in stud fees, that's where the MILLIONS would be made.
i think it was the SMITHSONIAN magazine last month did a story on barbaro's story.
when a horse lays down, it is bad for their organs. that's why during barbaro's rehab, he was on harness that literally lifted his body as he started to walk again. but even that harness is bad since it puts weight on the internal organs. so they limited him being on that harness.
in the end, the break broke again and a decision was made to put him down...
sad, but it's a fact of life.

This is true, the horse can not survive like a dog would with 3 legs. The thing that makes me mad is that fact that these injuries are highly at risk when racing. These horses are going so fast and any little slip is going to cause some sort of injury. I'm basically against this sport. Same goes for the Greyhound racing. Gray hound dogs are one of the most badly treated dogs. If they cant rase anymore they are put down or given to a shelters. The problem is that no one is going to want an old beet up dog that mostly likely is very aggressive. They are usually retired at 3 or 4 years young. It's an F-up sport. These MF'ers are forcing and pushing these animals lives to the death for what? Just so some fools can make some money of them and be entertained for a few minutes. I can't help to put myself in the shoes of some of these animals. How would we feel if were killed for not performing well?
