so it started today i can hear this rattle at 1750 rpm to 2250 rpm in any gear and even in neutral, coming from engine, checked oil looks fine, and the oil still has like 1100 miles of life left before it hits 3000 miles. . . any ideas? exhaust doesnt hit anything, just randomly started? i have no idea and it only seems to do it when the rpms are decelerating, not when im giving it gas unless in in the wrong gear, it almost sounds like if u were to shift from first to 4th or something. . . any ideas, shold i change the oil just in case
how much oil could have been consumed by now? it appears to be fine, but i cant get teh damn dipstick to get a clear line lol, any help or ideas, or comparisans would be great. . . lmk thanks

it had over 60k when i bought it from medic sti and im sure he had it done, ill ask

 

Ahh, yea find out.. It could be your timing belt 5th idler pulley going out.. If it hasn't been done yet, give me a call at 650-368-3290 at AHQ..

 

Everyone can speculate what it is, take it to a professional to diagnosis, and drive the car very little/if at all until then.

I assume AHQ is talking about part number 13073AA230? Never heard it called #5 but none the less we as well have seen this happen often, as well as the knurled idler; just did one on a 04 sti with 60k miles on it and we see it often on the FXT. And have a WRX with a failed idler here now Interference motor with idler broken = Not good.

It sucks b/c you shouldn't have to touch the timing area until 105K. But it does happen. You can be proactive and do the whole 105K service or replace the bad idler(s). If it was me, you're better off doing the whole service that way you don't have to dive back in; in another 30k miles.

Uppipe heat shield rattle? I can put my arm down into the engine bay on my STi and can freely move the heat shield around
