Help me understand babying cars
I was having this discussion with someone else and we were both shaking our heads when it comes to how people baby their subarus. There are a ton of you out there that get 5k-10k worth of expensive mods on your cars but you always drive under the speed limit and never track your car.
Whats the point of modding a car only to baby it till you sell it? Same goes with guys that are now selling their 06+ STIs with very low mileage and claim the cars have never been boosted hard.
Ive owned a 69 mustang, 86 rx7 turbo, 89 crx si and I can proudly say that I drove those cars with the intention of blowing their motors. Im not talking about driving like a maniac and jeopardizing others safety but why buy a 25k car and then drive it like a Geo metro?

I can understand trying to keep a car nice with low milage but I personally don't buy the 'never been boosted hard' or 'babied' comments from sellers. And this is kinda anecdotal but I'm in the camp that thinks if you run a babied car hard, it could have more issues or it won't be as powerful as a car thats been ridden hard it's whole life. Comments on that aspect?

We worked on a jaguar a while ago that was driven by an old lady to the grocery store and back only. The oil sludged up in the crankcase because the pcv wasnt allowed to do its job and she needed a new motor after only owning the car about 5yrs. She had the work done at the dealer and they didnt cover it under their warranty because she caused it.

I baby the throttle until temp gauge gets around the middle...
..then high RPMs may occur during merging.
As for those babying cars that were meant to be driven hard, we need a few people to preserve some copies. However, if one has a high-performance car, one should at least somehow exploit its capabilities.

Guilty. My car sees real boost probably once a week, mostly less. Whether or not you believe that is your issue. All my friends get extremely pissed at the way I drive. However I do agree that it's stupid that my car never gets driven for its purpose, one of the biggest reasons of my consideration to sell it.

When I bought my car, the GM said if I break the car in like a grandma, it will drive like a grandma.
I drive speed limit on the freeway, and almost never redline from stop lights. I save the aggressive driving for the track, where it's much more fun to really open it up.
So far, 2 years of 3500 oil changes w/ synthetic, stage 2 power, and multiple track days, the car is still running strong.

Well I've been **** on with 2 separate lay offs and stuck in my lease for home. My 06 sti AW has 14k on it. I loved my 05 I put 50k on tracked it, blah blah before its life as ended. This one is just wasting away as I have no money to use the thing. Every few days I debate on selling it.
No point is spending thousands of dollars on engineering you'll never use. The OP's point was basically you should jump off a bridge if you are a tool douche who buys a performance car to look and feel cool, while never even understanding what the point is nor ever using what he paid for.
Babying a car is cool when it's cold, and you might not want to floor it all day long. Remember shift quickly, not forcefully. That should keep a car in tip top shape.

What is to you how other people drive/treat there cars? Just drive your car how you want and others will mind there own business and do as they please. This really doesn't seem like a topic for discussion.
Not encouraging you to sell it but there are much more comfortable/luxurious cars out there. I couldn't imagine driving an STi without using the power all the time, all the bumps and potholes would drive me nuts!! It's really not a good daily driver if you don't have fun with the power and handling capabilities.

+1. QFT. why do people want others with nice cars to smash on them? who cares? it's their money. i have 308 awhp on a dd and hasn't seen a track day yet, but it may happen. it's nice to have the power available also. and driving around, thrashing your car, just means more maintenance and fixes along the way, which = more $.

Well my first subie I offroaded and rallied to the max. Then got my wrx, rallied it, rally-x'd it. Then I could tell it was getting beat on the exterior and I opted for a more clean, stanced look. Hoping it would keep me on the road more. I still don my snow tires and mob around on snowy roads when I can. It has a lot of suspension, but I use it everyday, all the time living in the mountains because every road is curved. So driving around is always naturally spirited and the handling really comes through. I do like to open up the boost every now and then to. But for the most part I baby it because I just want it to last forever since I love it so much.

Bottom line is I respect people who use things for their intended use, and try not to waste. So if a car is designed for performance, say an sti............I think it's pretty goddamn stupid to buy one to noodle around in at low rpms and grandma it. If you are super rich and you do have money to purely waste, ok but you are still a dikhead
