I thought Subaru gives you a serial number that came with the keys that you needed to keep if you lose the keys. I was told to not lose this. I had to use the serial number and my vin when I lost my spare motorcyle key before. If the dealer lets someone get keys with just a vin they should be at fault. They should check ID and only let the registered owner get a copy as well. Someone should try and go to the dealer with their own vin and see what happens and how it works.

That's a great Idea... Someone go! hehe otherwise, I'm just going to cover my vin number.

I've done it. In fact, I did it last week. Had a friend run the VIN for the car and get me the key code, then gave the key code to another friend who had a key made and sent it to me. The car isn't mine, either.

He had the key made at a Subaru dealer, but that's because we're friends with the employees.

One place it WON'T happen? Marin Mazda Subaru. How do I know? I work in the parts dept. there.

If you don't have a key I can trace, and you bring me a VIN, it had better be on the registration, and you'd better have a drivers license which matches EXACTLY. I will also be checking for the history of the vehicle, and making you fill out a form on which you tell me everything about the car...

Otherwise, no key!!

you could probably just get a VIN off a new car in the lot and steal one that way also. Sloppy people cutting keys...
