Putting 18k sounds like a good idea but I'm thinking you should put the 18k towards another car. Or simply save it. Keep the RS at hand and slowly build it up.

honestly I wouldn't dump my money on the RS.
$18K although it seems like a lot of money is really not that much BUT then again when are you going to be given money like that again? Throwing money into the RS is literally throwing money away. You need to fix the RS, convert it, buy all the parts and pay someone or shop to do the work = more likely than not; all your money.
and lets play devils advocate, you do it and you love it...then a deer or a tree jumps out at you and its gone. Hate to break it to you but your $18k investment + what you paid for the car + the other money you've spent on it is now worth $5k from the insurance company.
We are more than happy to help you mod or convert your subie but lets be real it will not handle or be as nice as a newer generation car....even if you do it all the right way, do you really want a caged RS to get the handling acceptable for daily driving? Trust me, you don't. And to top it all off, I'm sure a family is in your future, is that car going to be baby friendly?
RS-to-WRX/STi conversions are great for the guy who wants something different (even though they are common now) or for a dedicated track car and if your talking its going to be a track beast then you will need more than $18k, you can go ahead and easily triple that figure.
I'm not here to talk you in or out of anything. I get these emails all day long and I answer everyone of them the same way...think about what you're about to do before you do it. And keep in mind that all wrecked cars (Donor Cars) have issues; some minor and some major, they aren't totalled for no reason.
just my $0.02

Keep the RS as a beater daily.
Only dump money into an old car that gains value as it is restored.
Of coarse buying a new or new-ish subaru is also a loosing game financially.
I say pay off any debt that you have and save a little chunk to keep the RS running well.
