technically, the PSG1 is an "assault" rifle. with a removable mag, pistol grip and a semi auto action, it's an big black evil thing...
FWIW, i was eyeing one for $10k for a USED one...

I could never justify purchasing one when you can buy ten .700 actions for the same cost. I can't see anyone having a magazine in a sniper rifle unless they’re a poor shot or James Bond with 5 different targets.
You could easily do the same job with an M1 and a solid Bi-pod at a fraction of the cost.

well, since I AM the company commander, and we DO have a MK 19 for my MPs, guess who gets to play
. When I was enlisted, and later in ROTC, I carried the hog quite a few times. Frankly, between the M60 and the M249, I would rather have the 60. You could drag that thing through mud and rain, and it would still fire when you needed it. Pain to clean, though... although not as hard as the M249 (relatively speaking). Oh, I've also fired a Grease Gun (.45 full auto SMG). That was a BLAST.
Hell, I almost fired a 155 from an A6 Paladin. THAT would have been FUN. Sometimes, I think it's a travesty that we military types get paid to play with all this fun equipment .
We were supposed to fire the MK 19 back in November, but the bloody ammo requisition never got filled (all the active duty components got filled as priority).
... and I STILL hate that the current Army sidearm of choice is the M9. I LIKED the 1911. A .45 will stop a person a hell of lot more often than a 9mm will. I wish they would let us qualify with our own personal pistols. Would give me a reason to buy that Glock 23C I've had my eye on.

I couldn't agree more. That's what the arms room is for.

actually, it's the extreme shock, loss of blood, and destruction of vital organs that kills people...
