Use the thumb stick for steering and regardless what anyone says, you can do just fine with a controller.
Yep I can not stress how important it is not to mash. I do use the e-brake but only to extend the drift even further. I will use the brakes lightly to tighten up the turn. If you are setting up suspension, more understeer is what works for me.

I set up a n00b lobby drift track last night and limited the horsepower to 300 and the highest grip tire that can be used was comfort soft.

People were hating on me but it was even easier to see which drivers had the greater car control

Nice! I also find that "pulsing" the handbrake lightly works really well to get a small amount of rotation in the corner. Feathering/pulsing the brakes in a corner increases grip due to weight transfer. When "pulsing" per se, I never apply full - just tap-tap-tap dat... Button. You would never do this in real life, but... This is the matrix right? Rules were meant to be broken.

What? Why would you do that? I really don't get it. I have a friend who picks a car, leaves all the assist on, stays AT, and just upgrades to the highest power level - no tires, no suspension, no... That is completely missing the point, IMHO. But, ultimately, it's about having a fun time. Fun times!

When I first realized the physics engine can do this in GT4, it blew my mind. The game got even more massive. I do have to separate the dynamic physics at times though. In an actual race, I would find myself using the weight transfer theories for drifting and using them during race conditions. Some work for me, while other absolutely do not. Learning how to do car control through drifting did help me feathering and my lap times have gotten better as well as my control.

I set my controls up to use the triggers for brake/throttle and I use the right thumbstick for shifting. This is by far the best controller setup I've used to date.

I don't use any buttons for clutching... that's a bit much with a controller
