my buckaroo, on the other hand, loves the 87 we gots @work, which today went up a couple pennies to $2.09...yikes...for our gas! 91 octane notched up to $2.29.

I said it on the so cal board first, but it seems relevent so I'll repeat it here with apologies to anyone who gets upset by cross posting;
On my trip back to Berkeley after Rim Sunday-
Bridgeport CA, on highway 395 between Lee Vining and Reno, only two gas stations.
premium, 91 octane at both stations, self-serve.....
$3.199 per gallon.
in the immortal words of Eric Cartman, "screw you guys, I'm going home"
I refused to pay that much, even just to grab a half tank before going over the pass, but I expect we'll see it here in civilization in a matter of weeks

As much as I hate government control over private industries, but I think something needs to be done about the oil industry.
When everyone basically depends on gas, its a pain when the prices change so much. I guess what upsets me is when the price of a barrel of oil goes up on the stock market, we see the price change right away at the pump. When it goes down though, it takes a few days to even see a slight change.
So irritates me...

Well, ur all gona hate me, but I think they need to jack up the prices.
Its a limited resource, and its hella cheap if u think about it.
Ur car cost 30k, gas costs like 2k a year if u drive a fair amount. If they raised gas prices, maybe people would start caring bout how much they waste, and maybe traffic would decrease. Anyway, I think 5 bucks a gallon for the cheap stuff would be good... for now.
Don't hate me too much
just my 2 cents

just my 2 centsAs for oil being a limited resource, there is an end to it somewhere, but until I see the oil companies coming out with alternate fuels on their own without government mandates, I am sure there is still plenty to go around. I highly doubt that the oil companies will just want to call it quits when the oil supply runs out. They have people that know exactly how much is left and how long it will last. When they start to panic, then you know there is a problem.

personally I think the nations military adventures in the middle east are evidence that in the board rooms they actually are starting to panic.
Its pretty well well known that our reserves here in the states are dwindeling, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have the largest known reserves, but they will be pumped out and going into decline in the next few years, whether or not its under our control.
So we can probably get by for another decade or two from other countries that we might have to invade, but it is inevitable that it will always be more expensive than it once was.
And driving a prius or riding your bike is a good token gesture, but in the grand scheme personal transportation is only a small percentage of our nations oil consumption, think of all the plastics and paint we produce almopst all of it originates in fossil fuels, a lot more of it goes to commercial transportation as Scott mentioned, but even more still- by a huge margin, is consumed by our military, and since we're now in a never ending war against terror, the gas is going to run out even faster, but maybe thats what it will take to get alternative fuels developed to the point of viability.
In the end we're all dead anyway, so enjoy it while you can, and if your going to be out on 395, bring more cash than you think you'd need and be sure to fuel up wherever you see resonable prices because the next town might not have gas you can afford.
