And whats the difference between a park and street? Accidents can happen anywhere.

Its the city park law, but f*** the law, its stupid. The parents should be parenting and making their sub 18yr olds wear helmets(just like my dad did when I was learning). The city should not be profiting and parenting
I have to agree with you. I never wear a helmet, its just too bulky and it throws off my balance. I don't mind risking getting hurt cause I know how to fall the proper way and walk away without serious injury. I've walked away COUNTLESS times from stuff where I should have broke my leg, arm, twisted something but came out with not more than a scrape or cut. One of the biggest factors in skateboarding is that you get the adrenaline rush knowing that you could fall, but then manage to hit your trick and roll away. If I wore a helmet and pads all the time skating would just be boring cause I wouldn't have to worry about falling. The risk of injury is what give skaters the consistence in their tricks, you know you could fall but you determine yourself to land it to beat the odds and not get hurt. People who don't skate will never understand this. I've been skating for almost 10 years and never broke 1 bone, and never had anything more serious than a sprained ankle. Helmets and pads are more for kids who are stll learning and don't know how to fall properly, once you learn that then skateboarding is actually relativley safe when compared to other sports.

basically these cops see these big skate parks as dollar signs. Instant tickets since probably 10% of the people where helmets.
being a 32 yr old skater at heart, i still ride to the store etc.... just no more tricks and pipes. i completely agree that this is bs and the pig suck big *****. but perjury is not the way to deal with this.

It's true, as onemanarmy said, they see skateparks as money. Unfortunately, the state and federal governments see pretty much anything we "free citizens" do as money...ANYTHING. Think about it, you cannot drive without "permission" (drivers licenses), can't open businesses without it (business licenses), can't go hunting or fishing without licenses, etc..etc..and we call ourselves a free country?? Anyone would haveto be ignorant to make such a comment like that. But, I don't mean to send this to the politics forum...

Sorry to hear that your friend got caught. Better luck next time. I would've left the area when I saw the cop.

I would have, except the park has like an 8 foot steel cage around it!! Trapped like a rat, and anyways, ever since I turned 18 I dont run from the po-po.

And to all of you saying "You broke the law, blah, blah, blah, insurance, blah, blah" -- If you feel something is unfair, you rebel, take action, change things! I guess you just dont know what its like. I will be writing a letter (or more) to the city council/newspapers expressing my opinion on the helmet law and the pig cop. Will it do any good? Probably not, but I will know that I tried.

And I still have a HUGE problem with the insurance liablity issue. I mean, if you step on a skateboard, its logical to know that its f***ing dangerous. But still, there all these scumbag lawyers trying to make a buck and retards that wont take responsibilities for their own actions....but that is another topic.

I see. Well, ever since I turned 18 I have been avoiding them like the plague. Before I turned the big 1-8 I could've cared less...I was a minor. Now you really get screwed for anything because you are an "adult." I didn't say run from them, but I would avoid them as much as possible, as most of them are trained to collect revenue, not to protect anything...or communists, if you prefer.

You gotta be stupid to not wear a helmet. I can understand not wearing it if you are just riding down a street or whatever, but while at the skate park, come on.

What is the law regarding that anyways? Is it a city law for the use of the skate park you must wear a hemet? or is it like bikes, everyone under 18 must wear one?

sure. but do that on your own home. the city has to pay for insurance just for them to open that skate park.

try operating your own business. see how much insurance you have to cough up.

in the end, it all comes down to $$$$. and unfortunately, so did your friend.

I say file a complaint. If that pig had zero evidence your buddy was skateboarding, he needs to contest the ticket. Explain he is on disability and can not pain the fine, or do what OneManAmry is saying to do.

Anyone remember the sticker? Skateboarding is not a crime? Well its true.
The law is put there to protect the county from being sued when a minor hurts them selves and the parent is truely the one that should be held responsible.

How many of us run catless every day doing a lot more harm then someone skating without a helmet?

I have always beleived laws like this are total crap.

I don't see any perjury in what I told him to do?

I simply said go to court with a dr's note. I am sure that the dr. told him it was stupid to ride his skateboard with his cast on and to take a break. I know that's what they told me. It's true that the dr. said that. it's true that he had a cast on. it's true that he was not skating when the police officer arrived. it's true that the police officer did NOT see him skating.

I'm just saying state the facts.

He was there watching his buddies skate.

If he is asked if he was there skating he can't lie. so he can simply say I decline to answer that on account of my 5th ammendment rights. bottom line. the officer did NOT see him skating and can NOT give him a ticket...lawfully.

I'd take this **** to court in an instant and I guarantee I'd win.

I have a hard time believing that the government put out a dime for that skate park. I'm not sure obviously as I'm not from there and just plain don't know. But I'd imagine that it was purchased with tax payer dollars and donations from citizens.
Most skate parks go up because of the work put in by citizens. If it were up to the police they'd say no skate parks and they'd say no skating on the streets. Just one more thing taken away from the youth to do that's constructive. God forbid kids have something to do that doesn't revolve around parties, drugs and booze.

I think it's bull**** myself. I bet that cop rolled up to the skate park driving without his seatbelt on and made a few lane changes without a blinker and probably rolled a couple stop signs. Bet that same cop road his skate board or bicycle without a helmet...yeah for california laws to "save lives" and raise money.
