My friend told me its cause I wear a lot of cotton and the fibers in the car are mostly polyester, so if its dry out then it builds static easier or something like that.

What is static electricity?.
3. Get into a car and shuffle about on the nylon seat cover. Have the air conditioning blow air at you (full of charged particles). Now step out of the car and touch the car or some other metal object. (Sorry, it hurts, doesn't it!)
5. Wear two layers of clothing made of synthetic fibres. Move around a lot so the layers move against each other. This movement will build up a static charge on YOU. Now touch a large metal object. Ouch!

I mean....it's a hell of a lot more likely you'd blow yourself up filling a plastic gas can on a plastic truck liner....and even then it's a very slim chance.
Gas isn't as volitile as the movies try to make you think> I've thrown matches into buckets of gas...etc. FUMES..kill. And unless you freaking grabbed the gas handled and pulled it out of your tank by the metal part...I think blowing up is unlikely.

Seriously find out more before you lose your ash tray and decide to use your gas can as a butt snuffer.

As for the shoes, I wonder...

Actually the only times gas stations have ever blown up is because of static discharge. There's never been a case that was caused by a cell phone, or matches/lighter. But they do have strong evidence that static discharge causes explosions (static electricity is more electrons than you think).
You're right about the volatilaty of gas though, you can extinguish flames in liquid gas. But if there's vapor between your car and the nozzle, and static electricity arcs between the two...BOOM.

MVWRX...that's pretty much what I just said. the words cell and phone never made it into my post. And the matches/lighter thing echos what I said. but for humors sake.... http://www.cnn.com/US/9906/24/exxon.cellphones/
no fire has evern been proven to be started by a cellphone. ever.
As well as the static deal. That's what I said. It can and has happened...but chances are insanely slim. you figure we fill up our gas nationwide something like 18 billion times a year. and we have maybe...3-500 fires a year...maybe 150 get reported. And maybe 20 of them are related to static...many of those to idiots filling up gas cans on the truck bed.
