does anyone else get shocked when they exit their car?
Go to the International Auto Shows and you'll get shocked guaranteed 
But as for the shocks, just flick the door or a metal object with your fingernail. If a shock happens, you'll know, but you won't be able to feel it.

I get that static shock too... man, that's very annoying!! Especially when it's not called for, it just suddenly happen and get shocked, it makes me wanna kick my car.
My Solution:
I try grabbing the metal stem of the key for a couple of seconds to a minute, then while still holding the metal part, close the door. Sometimes, it does the job, and I think when it didn't work, I guess I wasn't holding on the metal part of the key long enough to discharge any static off my body. If I don't have that time to do that, I just use my feet to close the door to avoid the annoyance or wrap my hand with the sleeves of my sweater. Even that doesn't work sometimes when the static is too strong.
For those that are experiencing this problem, try my "key theory", if it works for you confirm by telling.

Like what pleiad7 said, just maintain contact with some metal part of the frame as you climb all the way out of the car.
I forgot to do that once and got my *** shocked trying to unlock the trunk with the key. I dropped the key and chipped a little paint off the bumper. Idiot.

I have also noticed that this NEVER happens ever in cars with leather. My '01 RS has leather, and haven't been shocked once. I always get shocked in cars with cloth seats. I am not saying everyone will get zhocked on cloth seats because I am sure there are people that don't, but this has been my experience.
Static Gard works, but you gotta do it every once in a while. I used it first in my dorm room when I used to get the $@#$ shocked out of me all the time. Worked great.
BTW I use a dryer sheet with every load, makes no difference. I have a grounding kit on my car - the shocks never changed at all before/after installing it. What WILL change tho is a grounding strap, if you want people to always be telling you there's something hanging down from your car..

It stopped happening to me when I put a metal shift **** in the car.
Don't know why. I figured it built up while driving because you're constantly going back and forth with your feet on the floor carpet. Then you get out..zap. but with my hand on the shifter it must go into the shift boot or something....hell if I know.
I just know it happens a lot less now.
Also...I nearly always push the door the rest of the way open with the window..bad habbit. maybe my window tint eats the shock.
As for the gas exploding shock..that's just craziness. I mean you'd have to have a rediculous amount of static and the perfect circumstances with fumes to do that. It's like a 1 in 10 billion chance or more. I mean....it's a hell of a lot more likely you'd blow yourself up filling a plastic gas can on a plastic truck liner....and even then it's a very slim chance.
Gas isn't as volitile as the movies try to make you think> I've thrown matches into buckets of gas...etc. FUMES..kill. And unless you freaking grabbed the gas handled and pulled it out of your tank by the metal part...I think blowing up is unlikely.
