As some of you may have heard, prior to tonight's meet I was at an open mic, where I took the opportunity to write a piece for Dan. As promised, here it is...
Dodging tears as the pen touches the pad.
My emotions a whirl, I…
I don’t know how to feel.
Sad, happy, worse yet… mad.
…At the world?
…At myself?
…At him?
Where to begin?
Well, first of all, here’s a bit of honesty.
We were never the best of friends.
It was the opposite… quite frankly.
There was even a time when we had stabbed each others’ back.
I’d be rambling on about how he’s like this, this and this.
He’d go on whispering to another how I’m like that, that, and that.
Till the both of us became weary of the childish game,
And with the very knives on our backs, the tension was slain.
From then on we still weren’t the best of friends,
But at least now our differences met their ends.
Eventually, our newly found bond withered with time.
Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t that our friendship didn’t last.
Life is funny sometimes and we took our own paths.
Although, when our roads would intersect,
We were always quick to acknowledge each other out of respect.
Funnier yet, was how life took me on a road
Which lead my mind to him.
That very day, I thought of ending the silence.
A simple, “Hey, let’s hang out… reminisce.”
Cupid would get me that day, barrage my heart till it sank.
To a depth, I never knew existed.
Regrets, I have but a few, yet the cliché I couldn’t ignore.
I was a day late, and a… you know what, I’d gather a buck to the amount of each fallen star that fills the night,
if it would make this all but a bad dream.
Not for me, but for everyone else that had it right.
The one’s fortunate enough to know him more than I did.
Sadly, it took your very own demise,
A slap to the face by God’s very own hand, for me to realize.
How truly genuine a friend you were, in fact.
You had companionship time did not toil, and relationships remained intact.
Now, I take comfort knowing that our paths will always meet.
So, till the day I journey to my end.
In eternal bliss, rest peacefully… my friend.
Peace All,
Karl

It was really nice seeing everyone... My foot was killing me and it was hard for me to walk around so if I didn't get a chance to come up to you or say hi, sorry... I tried to make my rounds as well as I could. You guys did a great job at turning out and making this meet into what it was. The family will for sure remember this for the duration of their lives, no doubt.
I don;t know about you guys, but when I saw Daniel's car parked there, it hit me really hard and I realized the gravity of the situation... I didn't realize it was his car until I saw the "keep pace" sticker on the window and thats when it hit me.
There was a very mixed feel to the event... Lots of great folks gathered but for a very sad reason.

I parked behind Dan's car when I got there. Honestly, my first thought was, "Oh, he's here!" Then, it hit. Yeah... Guess, I'm still trying to convince myself that this had all been a dream.

yeahh it was sad to see the car there but at the same time it was so refreshing to be able to gather with everyone and feel comfort and lots of support from everyone. daniel's mom is so awesome.. i see where daniel got it from.. i will never forget how great of a person he was.. and our last convo with roy and everyone about the weird midhaps just really hit home for me.. it's crazy to me.. but thanks everyone for being so supportive. i know daniel's mom appreciates it very much.

I definitely had a blast seeing everyone and how big the meet was.
Finally saw some people I haven't seen in months and even years.
It was a great pleasure to meet mom/ auntie/ grandma too. It was heart warming to see them and see how Dan lived his life w/ the suby community.
If I don't see you guys tomorrow, I'll see you Tuesday
this ones for you Daniel. I'm always thinking of you and it brings a tear to my eyes writing this. You will be missed dearly and I will always have the memories we've shared, I'll never forget all the good times. I wish I can see you one last time so I can give you the biggest hug ever but I know your spirit lives amongst us and that your looking down on us.
I love you brother!
