rx-7's are really nice, my friend has an FC< so jealous, fcs are cool too, one thing cuz of initial d, i started to like the looks. and rotary engines are quite fun to read about, as opposed to regular engines.

 

i drive a miata... it's actually a fun little car despite all the gay comments.

 

marc yeah the one at serramonte was and is still selling it. if he can get a good price its yours LOL. that white one is always at the tapx on fri and sat nights in foster city. my friends are his friends

 

Not much of a Mazda fan, but I really know nothing about the RX's.

How does the RX-7 compare to the RX-8? I know the gas mileage is horrid for the RX-8, but was that the case for the 7?

 

If I remember correctly from the RX-8 forums, after the break in period, they were getting good gas mileage (I don't remember exactly but somewhere between 18-22mpg).

Hmm.. never knew that n/a rotaries didn't need high octane gas.

 

25% are women. The other 15% are old guys or at least guys who autocross or participate in "spirited driving". Amazingly enough, I knew two guys from seperate areas who worked on their Miatas and took them out on the open roads all the time and they're college guys.

 

I used to own a '93 RX-7. It was pretty reliable. I bought the car with 77k miles on it. In the 4 years I kept it, it only needed regular maintennance plus a couple of wear and tear swap outs (starter at 100k etc).

It was a bit thirsty. I used to average 19-21 mpg. On the freeway it could get 24-27. This is pretty poor for a 2700 lb sports car.

The engine 'breaking' issue is a problem. The weak point in the engine is the 'O' seal around the rotor chamber. It performs a similar job to a head gasket. The 93-97 models had a tendancy for these to leak. The leak would get worse until you had to swap out the ring sometimes with less than 60k miles on the clock. This is pretty expensive (~3-4k$). Swapping out the turbos was a bit expensive as well, but most seemed to last around 100k miles.

Given the level of performance the RX-7 provides, most other cars in the same ballpark (Porsche, Lotus etc) would cost a lot more to maintain.

I still miss it and have thought about buying another before they all get to old/thrashed. It had awesome adhesion, braking and was quick. I loved its appearance as well. I sold it because I only had space for one car where I used to live, and the WRX was the more pratical option. I still believe that the base WRX is the best value for money on the planet.

 

Is it true that sometime between '05 and '07 that Mazda is going to introduce the new RX-7 that's going to be a turbo or TT version of the RX-8's renesis? I've heard rumors, but nothing concrete.

I heard about this too... it seems as if the years approaching 2010 will see the revival of many of the "A-class" '90s Japanese sportscars: a successor to the RX-7, a new generation Supra Turbo, the new GT-R Coupe, among others. I read about a few of these in Cars-i and J's Tipo magazines. I hope the 6 cylinder twin turbo setup returns as well (though it seems from these articles as if V8s may be more popular in these next gen Japanese sportscars though)
